Hazel I. Finday Manor needs volunteers

An hour a Day can make a Difference. Volunteer at Hazel I Findlay Country Manor. Assistance is needed for various Activities including Bingo, Playing cards and games, or to just chat, transporting residents to and from group activities and meals. Volunteers also are needed to provide companionship to residents as they travel to and from appointments. No experience is needed.

Police chase snarls traffic on old US-27 south of St. Johns

A police chase that started in downtown Laingsburg ended in a high-speed collision between the fleeing suspect and a DeWitt Township police officer Wednesday morning at the intersection of old US-27 and Jason Road.
Greenbush Twp. fire claims one life

On Sunday, January 5 the St. Johns Fire Department answered a call of a house on fire just after 7:00 p.m. at 3601 Hall Road in Greenbush Township. When they arrived the house was fully engulfed in flames, and firefighters were unable to enter the building.

Vandals hit Eureka Elementary

Vandals threw stones and broke windows at Eureka elementary school north of St. Johns on Tuesday night. Be listening to someone who may be bragging about doing this.
First marijuana retail location open in Owosso

Lume Cannabis Company launched Owosso’s first adult-use marijuana retail location. Recreational marijuana sales to began February 25. Lume’s Owosso store, located at 116 N. Washington, began offering its high-quality cannabis products to recreational customers on Tuesday.

City discusses underground tank issues

The building that currently houses the City’s Fire Department and Parks and Recreation Department was formerly a gas station. The gas station ceased operations in 1979 and was later sold to the City of St. Johns.
A number of underground tanks were removed from the site more than 30 years ago at a time that there were no government regulations regarding removal or potential ground contamination.

Contaminated soils were then removed and disposed of in accordance State regulations. The excavation site is now in the process of being backfilled and restored.

Wilson Center Auditorium project completed

The Wilson Center Auditorium Renovation Committee has deemed their work complete.

The renovation of the beautiful Wilson Center Auditorium began with a Sesquicentennial Pageant presentation back in 2006. In looking for a space to hold this celebration, a committee looked into the old auditorium only to find it in disrepair. It was being used as a storage area for old unwanted desks, file cabinets, blackboards and the like after junior high school students moved into a new building in 1998.
Governor asks residents to “stay home, stay safe, save lives”
Yesterday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” Executive Order (EO 2020-21), directing Michiganders to temporarily stay in their homes unless they’re a part of the critical infrastructure workforce, engaged in an outdoor activity, or performing tasks necessary to the health and safety of themselves or their family.

MMDHD confirms first Clinton County presumptive positive COVID-19 case

Mid-Michigan District Health Department (MMDHD) has been informed of a presumptive positive COVID-19 case in a Clinton County resident. The specimen will be sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for confirmatory testing.
Mancino’s donates food

Being closed for two weeks meant that Mancino’s would have food in their coolers that would go unsold. To avoid having food go to waste a good portion of it was donated to Beacon of Hope in St. Johns so it could be a blessing to those in need.
Thank you to John Leif from First Baptist Church and John Thelen from St. Vincent De Paul for picking up the food so it can be distributed.
Arts Council begins Art Cart early

The Clinton County Arts Council have started the Mobile Art Cart project early this year. Since the community is distributing food packages and children are off from school, organizers felt this was the perfect opportunity to partner with the St Johns School system Food Department and give out craft bags again.
Free food for kids during school closing
The U.S. Department of Agriculture approved a waiver from the Michigan Department of Education on Friday, March 13 allowing school lunches to be distributed without the requirement that students eat meals in a group setting or at school. The program is called Unanticipated School Closure SFSP.
Community Christian Church delivers treats to First Responders

The Community Christian Church of St. Johns youth group delivered baked goods that they and members of the church prepared for first responders.

Those enjoying special teats included St. Johns Police Department, Clinton County Sheriff’s Department, and Clinton Area Ambulance Service.

Compassion in Action will be distributing food curbside on Wednesday and Friday, and going forward as supplies last.

Provide outreach to the homeless

St. Vincent de Paul in St. Johns, as well as other local agencies, received an appeal from Housing Services Mid-Michigan who provide outreach to the homeless population in the Tri-County area. H.S.M.M. works with the most vulnerable in our community experiencing homelessness.
They were able to provide over 40 coats, 3 sleeping bags, hats, scarves, gloves, socks and hand warmers. Please continue to pray for those experiencing homelessness and for those in positions to serve them.
MMDHD prepares for influx of Covid-19 positive individuals
The Mid-Michigan District Health Department (MMDHD) serves Clinton, Gratiot and Montcalm Counties, and they are preparing for an influx of individuals who have tested positive for Covid-19, and are either:
1. Not severe enough for hospital admittance, or
2. Have recovered enough to warrant discharge.
These individuals will still need to be quarantined for 14 days.

Tuesday’s weather seemed to match the mood of the administrators and teachers as they happily handed out caps and gowns today.
Multiple High school senior families lined up in front of the school in their cars to get their fill of free t-shirts provided by Custom Embroidery Plus of St. Johns and free yard signs given by Sport Stop of St. Johns.
Historical Museum to remain closed

Unfortunately, due to present circumstances the Clinton County Historical Museum in St. Johns will be closed until further notice.
Wilson Center sale goes to Lansing developer

The Board of Education of St. Johns Public Schools on Monday evening approved the sale of the Wilson Center, the former Rodney B. Wilson School, to a Lansing developer who vowed to keep part of the facility for community use.
During a virtual Zoom meeting Board members voted unanimously to accept a $50,000 offer by Dymaxion Development to buy the Wilson Center which served as both a high school and middle school and now houses the school district’s alternative education, preschool and child care programs. Last year the company bought the former Holmes Street School in Lansing.
St. Vincent de Paul to begin accepting some donations

St. Vincent de Paul in St. Johns will be open for donations only starting Wednesday, May 27, 2020. The retail store is not yet open.
Scheduled Soapbox Derby cancelled

The 2020 Soapbox Derby event is now cancelled. Organizers will be looking at the possibility of some practice days and fun runs later in the year. Those dates will need to be determined later as they evaluate restrictions and public health.

Foreback gets a hole in one

Congratulations to Bob Foreback on getting a hole in one at the Emerald on #8 Wednesday, June 3, 2020! He used his 8 iron and was 92 yards out. Witnesses were: Bud Walters, George Smith and Craig Knight.
Area law enforcement agencies send message to community
On Sunday evening June 7, 16 law enforcement agencies with 29 cars from Ingham, Eaton, and Clinton Counties met at the Mason High School to send a message to our community. That message is this:
National Night Out 2020 cancelled

The St. Johns Police Department will not be hosting their annual National Night Out celebration this summer. Because of the restrictions on size of gatherings and the fact that most of the activities that make this event so enjoyable are very difficult to clean/sanitize between users, they have made the difficult decision to not move ahead with the usual August NNO event at the City Park.
Bingham Solar being built on E. Walker Rd

Some large-scale renewable energy is being developed near St. Johns. A large solar farm is being built in Bingham Township on East Walker Road just East of Scott Road. The site location on East Walker Road is very close to the Consumers Energy electrical substation on E. Steel Road, so they can transmit the solar electrical energy being generated up to the State/Interstate Electrical Grid.
HIFCM adds visitation stations

Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor has announced that they are scheduling outside visits with their residents.
The maintenance and activity staff have been busy constructing comfortable “visitation stations.”

In an efforts to protect residents please adhere to the following rules: you must stay on the opposite side of the station, no touching, masks must be worn by all participants and no food, beverages or personal items can be exchanged during visits.
2020 MHT Parish Festival – Pandemic style

Most Holy Trinity Parish in Fowler has announced that they are unable to hold a normal Parish Festival with the ongoing pandemic and the uncertainty of what things might look like at the end of July. With that being said, they still want to do something special both for the parish and the community of Fowler.
2020 Mint Festival cancelled

After much deliberation the Clinton County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 St. Johns Mint Festival. With continued concerns about the COVID-19 virus, the Board felt that this was the best way to proceed during such an unprecedented global situation.
MHT roof repaired
The recent storm damaged the roof of Most Holy Trinity Church in Fowler. We’re happy to report that the roof was fixed two days afterwards later.

Local man makes 2nd hole in one at the Emerald

Josh Devereaux of St. Johns made his second career hole in one last week at the Emerald Golf Course. This feat was accomplished on number 4 using a 4 iron to send the ball 209 yards. Bryan Purvis, Don Koenigsknecht and Doug Hankey were on hand to share this ace.

Sheriff’s Office K9 Smokey receives donation of body armor

Clinton County Sheriff’s Office K9 Smokey has received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. Hometown cowboy and national high school rodeo qualifier Hunter Wylie had his first runs this week. Hunter is a freshman at St. Johns High School. He is also the only cowboy from St. Johns on team Michigan.

With the new state guidelines that went into effect on Friday July, 31 a decision was made to temporarily close down our popular Concert in the Park series here in St. Johns.

Familiar greenhouse site of Sunday morning fire

Fire destroyed one of the greenhouses at Howe’s Greenhouse and Flower Shoppe located in DeWitt Township. Firefighters got the call about the fire around 3 a.m. Sunday.
Special Olympics receives donation

Every Friday the Journey FCU team is able to wear jeans and dress down for a cause.
The charity of choice for July was the Special Olympics Area 28. With the dress down dollars and other donations, the team was able to raise $254.11 to donate to Special Olympics Area 28.
SJPS Board approves plan to reopen schools

On Monday evening the Board of Education for the St. Johns Public Schools approved a plan to reopen schools on Tuesday, September 8. The vote was unanimous. The plan now must be submitted to the Intermediate School District by August 15.

Due to Covid related restrictions and the inability to social distance, there will not be a 2020 St. Johns Light Festival and Santa Parade. They will be hard at work building for 2021.
St. Johns Schools move to remote learning beginning Tuesday
In an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 and keep students, staff and families safe, St. Johns Public Schools will move all students to a remote learning platform starting on Tuesday, November 3 through November 13, 2020. Adventure Club will be closed as well, however, Little Wings will remain open at this time.

Community Thanksgiving Take-out Dinner is November 26

The annual Clinton Community Thanksgiving Celebration and Dinner is a celebration of all that is good about community life in the Mid-Michigan Region. They are an interfaith endeavor put on by volunteers for all people of the area at Columbian Hall, the Knights Of Columbus Hall, 1108 N. US 27 in St. Johns.
SJPS extends remote learning until after Thanksgiving at least

St. Johns Public Schools continue to have students and staff who are either positive for coronavirus or are quarantined. This makes it very difficult to conduct in-person classes with any regularity. Because of this the schools are going to continue the suspension of in-person classes through the week of Thanksgiving.

The St. Johns Police Department have closed their lobby until further notice in order to minimize contact between staff and the public for non-essential services.
COVID closes City Offices

Due to the current COVID situation, the City of St. Johns offices will close to the public effective Monday, November 9 for a minimum of 3 weeks.

I attended the lighting of the Hospice Tree on the grounds of Sparrow Clinton Hospital on Tuesday evening. The tree is a tall well formed tree; and when lit it takes your breath away.
Hanover retires from City Council
Hanover retires from City Commission after 21 years On Monday night the St. Johns City Commission held their regular meeting via Zoom.
During the meeting the Commission approved a Resolution of Appreciation for Commissioner Heather Hanover. She is retiring from the City Commission after 21 Years of public service.
She and her husband Karl continue to work on getting the Sugar Bowl designated a National Historic Place and plan to start remodeling soon.
SJPD continues to participate in No Shave November

Members of the St. Johns Police Department are again participating in No Shave November. Each officer who participates is paying $50 that will be donated to No Shave November.
No-Shave November’s mission is to raise funds for cancer research and treatment while educating the population about preventative measures. The No-Shave November campaign has successfully raised over $10 million to combat this disease, but the fight is not over yet.

No-Shave November is a web-based, non-profit organization devoted to growing cancer awareness and raising funds to support cancer prevention, research, and education.

In the 11th month, the 11th hour on the 11th day, I attended the Veterans Memorial Service at the Veteran’s Memorial here in St Johns.

MMDHD nearly overwhelmed with COVID-19 cases

At a recent meeting of the Board of Health Marcus Cheatham and Dr. Dr. Jennifer Morse, Medical Director since 2015, reported on conditions in Clinton, Gratiot and Montcalm Counties.
According to Health Officer Cheatham the Mid Michigan District Health Department’s work load has increased by 1000%. Of course other Michigan districts are in the same boat, he says.
SJPS extends remote learning through December 18
The number and percent positive COVID-19 cases continues to rise across Clinton county prompting the St. Johns Public Schools to say that they will not be able to maintain consistent in-person learning within their buildings as we go through the next month. Keeping these factors in mind, SJPS will remain on remote learning through Friday, December 18, 2020.

COVID-19 quarantine guidance updated

Mid-Michigan District Health Department is changing its COVID-19 quarantine guidelines to align with those made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on December 2, 2020.
The previous 14-day quarantine period was based on earlier data that estimated the COVID-19 incubation period. However, recent data found 90 to 99 percent of COVID-19 infections occur within 10 days of exposure.

In-Person Learning returns to SJPS January 11

St. Johns Public Schools will extend remote learning for the week following winter break. Remote learning for all students will continue from Monday, January 4 through Friday, January 8, 2021.
MMDHD expects vaccine as early as next week

The Mid Michigan District Health Department has chosen Sparrow Carson Hospital as the distribution point for vaccines for its Clinton, Gratiot and Montcalm County area. Originally it was thought that the hospital would receive the Pfizer vaccine; but as Health Officer Marcus Cheatham told the Board of Health this week that it now appears that the satellite hospital will be the repository for the area’s Moderna vaccine once it has been approved.
