Closed effective October 19, 2021

A longtime local favorite restaurant has become another casualty of the pandemic. The Wheel Inn closed its doors for the last time on Monday.

We would like to thank each and everyone of you who have supported us over the past 22 years,” said owners John and Pam Foster. “When Juanita O’Leary approached us to purchase the business, we were so very grateful for this opportunity, but alas, the only constant in life is change, so we will be moving in a new direction and selling the property so that another fortunate business owner can make a living and employ local talent.”

The property went up for sale in September.

SJPD officers receive awards

Five St. Johns Police Department officers were given awards at a recent department meeting.

Officer Brown and Lt. Verlinde were awarded a Department Citation for an incident on August 24, 2020 at approximately 6:56 a.m., where they responded to the report of a delusional male subject armed with a machete. Upon their arrival, Lt. Verlinde and Officer Brown were able to successfully negotiate the subject into relinquishing the machete, but they were not able to have him surrender additional edged weapons, which were classified as a “Butcher’s Kit”. When the subject began to drift dangerously close to pedestrians utilizing a walking trail, Lt. Verlinde and Officer Brown first deployed Tasers and finally physically subdued the subject and took him into custody. There is no question that the quick, decisive, actions taken by these officers mitigated a very real and present threat to citizens in the area at the risk of their own personal safety.

Sgt. Helms, Officer Pulling, and Officer Harless were awarded a Certificate of Merit in recognition of sustained, outstanding contributions in the field of drug law enforcement on behalf of the City of St. Johns.

City posts leaf collection dates

The following is the leaf collection schedule starting in November along with the map indicating when each section is scheduled for pick-up:
Section 1 (November 1—5)—South of M21 and West of S. Clinton Avenue
Section 2 (November 8—12)—South of M21 and East of S. Clinton Avenue
Section 3 (November 15—19)—North of M21 and West of N. Clinton Avenue
Section 4 (November 22—26)—North of M21 and East of N. Clinton Avenue

If you wish to rake, please rake leaves in a pile in the City right-of-way area in front of your house, between the sidewalk and the curb. If there is no sidewalk in front of your property, please rake leaves 6 inches behind the curb but not further than 6 feet from the curb. Do not rake leaves in the street as the leaves can be hazardous with traffic and also block storm sewers from draining properly. Anyone raking or otherwise placing leaves, trimmings, and similar type organic plant materials in the public street will be subject to a $50 civil infraction fine.

City residents also have the option to bag their leaves. Each property owner can receive up to 2 packs (10 bags) of yard waste bags, which can be picked up at City Offices (1st floor, Clinton County Courthouse). These bags will be picked up at the curb during your normal scheduled leaf collection pick-up.

Just a reminder, despite all advanced preparation, equipment can breakdown or weather events can slow or end the program early. Plan to have your leaves raked before your scheduled week. Early snowfall requires equipment and crews to be redirected to snow removal operations.

The regular curbside brush pick up is suspended during leaf pick-up.

Loose leaves and biodegradable yard waste bags can also be taken to the Department of Public Works, 1000 N. US-127 BR. This site is open 24/7. Please use the Kuntz Drive entrance located behind Journey Federal Credit Union. If you have any questions, please call (989) 224-8944, ext. 229.

******

If you or someone you know is physically challenged and unable to rake their leaves in the city limits, please contact the City of St. Johns at (989) 224-8944, ext. 282 by November 4.

The annual Rake-N-Run is a volunteer group of St. Johns Public School students who enjoy helping out those in need in our community. There are a limited number of spots available, so please call early to get added to the list.
