Duplain Church of Christ VBS

VBS is here! From Sunday, July 15th, 2018 until Thursday, July 19th, 2018, we will host Vacation Bible School here at Duplain. VBS will begin at 6:30 pm and will end at 8:30 pm each night. All kids in preschool to 5th grade are invited to come enjoy VBS. You can save time by pre-registering online at duplainchurch.org/vbs-registration.

– Suntree Apartments, 1100 Sunview Dr., St. Johns, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, July 12, and at

– The Meadows of St. Johns, 2265 W. Parks Rd., St. Johns, from 3 pm to 5 pm, Thursday July 12.

Tween Makerspace – Our first Tween Makerspace program is Tuesday, July 10, from 6:30-7:30p.m. ‘Tweens ages 9-12 can join us for this new program where they’ll have hands-on fun designing and creating roller coasters using everyday household objects. This program for independent participants will feature plenty of self-directed planning and creating time. Registration is required and is now open.

Caribbean Steel Drums
– Our Summer Reading Finale program will be a musical experience for the whole family to enjoy. On Tuesday, July 17, from 7:00-800p.m., professional musicians will be drumming, singing, and dancing during this interactive exploration of African and Caribbean contributions to the world of music. No library card or registration is needed to attend this free program.

Toddler Storytime: Children ages 2-3 (with a participating adult) are invited to join us on Wednesday mornings at 10:30-11:00 from August 1st to August 22nd. The program will include stories, music, movement and crafts. Registration is required and open now.

Garden Buddies: Grow with us in the Rae Johnson’s Children’s Garden, where will learn about what is takes to grow the food we love to eat. Children ages 7-12 are invited to join us for our second session of Garden Buddies on Tuesday evenings starting July 31st and going thru August 21st. We will be meeting behind the library for this program from 5-6:30pm. Registration is required and open now.

Chapter Chatter – It’s all fun and games for our next Chapter Chatter session, Monday evenings, 7:00-7:45p.m., August 6-27. We will share a short chapter book over the 4-week session, and we will play, toss, balance, spin, and more with a series of games each week. Registration is required, and begins Monday, July 9.

Back to School – Students who will be entering preschool or kindergarten are welcome to join us for stories about starting school, a craft, and a snack on Thursday, August 9, from 6:30-7:30p.m. Registration for this program is required, and begins Thursday, July 12.

Tween Program – Tweens ages 9-12 can join us on Tuesday, August 7, from 6:30-7:30p.m. when we will be creating shoebox cities! During this makerspace event, tweens will use recycled materials to design neighborhoods and create a city. Registration is required for this event, and begins on Tuesday, July 10.

S.A.M. in the Summer – Fun, hands-on activities in Science, Art, and Math for children in grades 1-6. SCIENCE #1: Grades 1-3, Wednesday, 7/11, 3-4pm. SCIENCE #2: Grades 4-6, Wednesday, 7/18, 3-4pm. MATH #1: Grades 4-6, Wednesday, 7/25, 3-4pm. MATH #2: Grades 1-3, 8/1, 3-4pm. Registration for all S.A.M. programs is required and is open.

Tales to Tails – Free Reading Program with 15 minute sessions for children ages 6-12 to practice reading aloud to Ruger, a certified therapy dog. Summer Schedule: 2nd Thursdays, 7/12 & 8/9 from 6:30-7:15. Extra sessions will be considered if time slots fill up. This program encourages confidence & reading skills over the summer in a relaxing environment. Registration is required and is open.

Family Movie Fridays – We will be once again showing free movies for the family to enjoy. Movies will continue each Friday in July, and all shows begin at 2:30p.m. Registration, and a complete list of all the movies being shown this summer, are now available on our website.

Bookaholics Book Club
– The Bookaholics Book Club is taking it easy in July, with no assigned book, so when we meet it will be for an informal chat about our favorite books we have read outside of the book club. If you’ve been curious about the club, this is the perfect opportunity to stop by and see what we’re about! We meet Thursday, July 19 at 6:30p.m. at the library.

Leonard announces July office hours

Speaker of the House Tom Leonard, R-DeWitt, will host office hours to meet with local residents and discuss their concerns about state government. Speaker Leonard represents Michigan’s 93rd District.

The coffee hour will take place on Friday, July 13, 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. at Big Boy, 1408 Old U.S. 27, St. Johns

Local residents are encouraged to bring comments, questions and concerns about local government and anything else happening in the local community.
