Sparrow honors volunteers, has openings for more

Sparrow is celebrating its volunteers during National Volunteer Week and is asking more community members to consider serving the Mid-Michigan region. A variety of opportunities are available for adult community volunteers including the Gift shops at Sparrow Clinton Hospital.
Volunteers have always been at the heart of Sparrow. The health system was founded in 1896 when 114 women volunteers signed a charter creating the Women’s Hospital Association and its governing board, known today as the Women’s Board of Managers.
For over 125 years, volunteers have continued to support Sparrow’s mission of providing quality, compassionate care to everyone, every time. Sparrow Health System has bout 725 active volunteers who logged over 41,000 hours in 2021. Through the decades, volunteer groups have raised some $14.4 million to provide care and services to patients and the community. Those groups include the Sparrow Service Auxiliary; Women Working Wonders; Sparrow Hospital Guild and Sparrow Clinton gift shop.
Volunteers have also played a pivotal role at the internationally recognized Sparrow Laboratories Drive-Thru Services Site at Frandor in Lansing. Some 330 volunteers have assisted in sometimes extreme weather conditions to administer COVID tests and vaccines at the site.
Those interested should check out Sparrow.org/Volunteers.

Meals on Wheels seeking Volunteers
The Tri-County Office on Aging (TCOA) is looking for volunteers to be delivery drivers for the Meals on Wheels (MOW) program. Volunteers deliver nutritious meals straight to the doors of participants during the lunch hour, improving access to food and providing a friendly check-in for vulnerable older adults and persons with disabilities. Volunteers have the opportunity to connect with their fellow community members on a schedule that works for them, with a commitment of as little as one hour per week to one per month.
Meals on Wheels is preparing to safely reopen many of the Monday-Friday routes that were converted to once-weekly routes during the pandemic. As more routes reopen, volunteer needs are increasing. MOW can use dozens of new volunteers.
More Information about Meals on Wheels Volunteer Role:
– Volunteers pick up a box of food from a site near the beginning of their route and deliver to approximately 10-15 participants. Volunteers drive their own vehicles. Mileage reimbursement is available.
– Routes take about one hour to complete. Meals may be picked up anytime between approximately 11:00 AM and 12:30 PM.
– Some volunteers choose consistent days to deliver (i.e. every Tuesday or every other Wednesday) and others are flexible “on call” volunteers so that Meals on Wheels can contact them about their availability when other volunteers cannot make their shift.
– Deliveries occur throughout Clinton, Eaton, and Ingham counties. Volunteer needs are widespread, but the area of greatest need is currently Lansing.
All volunteers must have a valid driver’s license. A criminal background check is completed for each applicant. For more information or to volunteer, please apply at www.tcoa.org/volunteer or contact Casey Cooper at CooperC@tcoa.org or 517-887-1377.
