Suzanne Jean Kobylarz

Suzanne “Sue” Jean Kobylarz, of St. Johns, died on May 9, 2022 due to complications of a fall weeks earlier. She was 64 years old.

Born on August 14, 1957 in St. Johns, Michigan, Sue was the daughter of Duane and Carol LaRue and a 1976 graduate of Ovid-Elsie High School. She married Michael Kobylarz on August 21, 1976.

Sue was caring and creative. She had a kind heart, was loved by all and cherished time spent with her family and friends. Sue enjoyed exploring flea markets, garage sales and antiques, and made many candles, soaps and cement lawn ornaments for craft shows.

She will be missed by many, especially her husband of nearly forty-six years, Mike Kobylarz; son, Jeremy (Marie) Kobylarz; daughter, Jamie Kobylarz; her brother, James (Shanda) LaRue, as well as nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family members and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Suzanne and Mike’s home, 6400 N. Scott Road, St. Johns on Saturday, May 21, 2022 from 2-6 PM. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to American Cancer Society.

Robert Michael Rutter

Robert Michael “Rob” Rutter, age 71, of Mecosta, MI, formerly of St. Johns, MI, passed away Monday, May 9, 2022 at Spectrum Health Systems- Butterworth Campus, Grand Rapids, MI.

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI, at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, May 17, 2022. Burial will take place at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, MI at a later date. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 from 12:00 P.M. until the time of the funeral service at the funeral home.

Robert was born in Carson City, Michigan on May 28, 1950, the son of Richard and Esther Jane (Roberts) Rutter. He graduated from St. Johns High School. Rob married Lori Goodwin on December 12, 1980.

Rob did maintenance and upkeep for many rental properties in Lansing. He enjoyed fishing, working and coffee with his buddies. Rob also enjoyed trips to Famous Taco with his family and friends. Most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren and was a proud grandpa. Rob proudly served his country in the United States Navy.

He is survived by his wife Lori Rutter, children: Tammy and Troy O’Weller, Ann and Don Freels, Sarah and Dan McQueen, Scott Rutter, Christina and Andy Bain, and Joshua Rutter. He is also survived by grandchildren: Landon, Emelia, Elysse, Natasha, and Nathan, and many other grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Carrie Sue Huard

Carrie Sue Huard, age 57, of St. Johns, MI, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2022, at her home surrounded by her family.

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI, on Monday, May 16, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, MI. Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 15, 2022 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel.

Carrie was born in St. Johns, Michigan on October 25, 1964, the daughter of Jerry Crowell and Barbara (Ludwick) Crowell. She graduated from St. Johns High School. Carrie married Joseph Huard on May 15, 1995 in St. Johns, MI.

Carrie obtained her CNA certification in 1993 and went to work with Hazel I. Findlay in St. Johns for over 20 years and was still employed. She enjoyed reading and watching scary movies. She loved spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband Joe Huard of St. Johns, MI; son Nicolas Huard of Evanston, IL; daughter Brandye and Joe Croley of Eaton Rapids, MI; father Jerry (Linda) Crowell of McMillan MI; grandchildren: Mason, Jack, Will, and Kate Croley; sisters: Cheryl and Jeff Wagner of Harrison, MI; and Chris and Al Droste of Freeland, MI. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and 3 step-sisters. She was preceded in death by her mother Barbara and her grandparents.

Carla J Berkhousen

Carla J Berkhousen, formerly of St. Johns Michigan, died Friday May 6, 2022, at the age of 74, in the Villages of Florida.

Carla was born on January 10, 1948 in Battle Creek, Michigan, the daughter of Luella and Ernest Christensen. She worked for the St. Johns Public Schools for twenty years.

She is survived by her husband, Clark Berkhousen; daughters, Christine (Tim) Cleaver and Carrie (Jarrod) Workman; one son, Cory (Tristan) Berkhousen; six grandchildren, Austin (Cassandra) and Jamison Cleaver, Logan (Stephanie) and Peyton Workman, Madison and Callie Berkhousen.

No Services are planned at this time. Beyer Funeral Home of Lady Lake Florida assisted with cremation.

Anthony James Ebert

Anthony James “Tony” Ebert, age 52, of DeWitt, Michigan, passed away on May 5, 2022, at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Catholic Community of St. Jude, in DeWitt, MI, on Thursday, May 12, 2022, at 11:00 A.M., with Rev. Fr. Dave Speicher presiding. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2022, from 9:30 A.M.-until the time of service. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Tony’s life.

Anthony was born on January 19, 1970 in Lansing, MI to Jim and Joanne Ebert. Tony graduated from DeWitt High School in 1988 and West Point Military Academy in 1992 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He served 3 years on Active Duty with 3 years Army Reserves before moving to Dallas, TX, where he began working for SCA Promotions. He held various positions that contributed significantly to the business, most recently as a Business Development Manager.

Tony spent 23 years and 10 months with SCA Promotions and was blessed to work with an amazing group of colleagues that will remember him for his drive to excel and his affable and competitive nature. In almost every situation, except for his blind spots regarding The Pistons, Lions, Tigers, Red wings and the “Black Knights of The Hudson”, Tony was extremely objective, analytical and thoughtful. He was always willing to take the time to help his fellow employees. He was also known for his encyclopedic knowledge of 80’s hair metal music.

Tony enjoyed every chance he could to spend time with family and friends. He was kind, generous, extremely funny and so supportive of everyone he knew. He was also a man of many surprises and he always had a trick up his sleeve. Tony was also a huge sports fan and he was living to see the day the Lions won a Super Bowl, and he had a lifelong feud with Hannah about the Dallas Cowboys. He was his children’s biggest cheerleader and fan – always there to watch his son play and practice hockey as well as watching his daughter play volleyball. Tony was so proud of Hannah and Ryan, both of whom achieved greatness in his eyes no matter what they were trying to achieve, and he supported them unconditionally. He was able to experience what it’s like to be and feel as a grandfather when his delightful grandson Brady came into this world, a gift that gave him so much joy. Although Tony and Julie, the mother of his children, were no longer joined in marriage, they remained strongly partnered in a deep, lifelong friendship. They spent almost every holiday together with their children, attending their children’s events together and they took trips together as a family that resulted in a lot of good laughs and memories for everyone.

He had a special love for his “English Creams”: Jax and Sadie. English Cream Golden Retrievers are gentle souls and were specifically picked as a breed for Tony by his sister, Debbie, who also shared his love for dogs. Jax and Sadie gave Tony so much joy and support and will continue to be loved and cared for by his children and Julie, where his loving spirit will live on.

He is survived by his children: Hannah Grace Ebert of Grand Rapids, MI; and Ryan Anthony Ebert of Rockford, MI; grandson Brady Ashton Ebert of Grand Rapids, MI; his parents, James (Jim) and Joanne Ebert of DeWitt, MI; two sisters: Renae Ebert of Chicago, IL; Debra Moore of Winchester, VA; his lifelong friend and mother of his children Julie Ebert of Rockford, MI; and two precious English Cream Golden Retrievers: Jax and Sadie Sue. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Bruce R. Van Vleet

Bruce R. Van Vleet, age 84 passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Grace Haven Assisted Living Center. Bruce was born on January 3, 1935 in St. Johns the son of Robert F. and Arleita B. (Armstrong) Van Vleet. He graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School in 1953 and worked for Clinton County Road Commission as a truck driver for 30 years, retiring in 1993. On October 2, 1960 he married Barbara J. Schenck in Indiana. Bruce was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church, loved playing games with his grandchildren, especially Croquet, fishing and playing cards.

Survivors are his wife, Barbara, children Brian Van Vleet of Niles, MI, Brad (Robin) Van Vleet and Brenda (Billy) Geer both of St. Johns, and Betsy (Jim) Clark of AZ. Three grandchildren, Jacob Van Vleet, Erika Geer and Alexander Clark. Siblings, Gary (Shirley) Van Vleet of St. Johns, Ronald (Iris Jean) Van Vleet of CO. and Janet (Ed) Thompson of CA. He was preceded in death by grandson Samuel Geer and sister Marlene Monfort.

A Memorial Service will be held at McGeehan Funeral Home, Keck-Coleman Chapel, 1500 Waterford Parkway, St. Johns, on Wednesday, June 1, at 2 PM, with gathering beginning at 1 PM.

Winifred Ann Wallace

Winifred Ann Wallace, age 87, of Pensacola, FL, formerly of Maple Rapids, MI passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2022, at her home.

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI, on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. Burial will take place at Sowle Cemetery, Essex Twp, MI. Visitation will be held on Monday, May 9, 2022 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes – Osgood Chapel, St. Johns, MI.

Winifred was born in Lansing, Michigan on December 23, 1934, the daughter of Leland and Mariam (Ware) Crum. Winnie married William H. Wallace on December 30, 1951 in Maple Rapids, MI. William passed away on April 7, 2001.

Winnie worked for the State of Michigan in the Treasury Department for 10 years. She then went on to work at Goco Inc. for 20 years as a cashier. Winnie loved plants and gardening. She enjoyed playing euchre with friends and family and she participated in many tournaments. She was a member of the Ostomy Support Group in Pensacola, FL.

She is survived by her children: Linda Potter, Jean and Terry Sillman, Lorie and Alvin Harrison, and JaNean Reid. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband William, sons-in-law: Tom Reid and Bill Tyler and great-grandchildren Ruby and Jack Reid.
