Big Band Jazz featured on special September 6 Concert

Songs from the “Great American Songbook” will float on the summer breeze when the Lansing Concert Band Big Band performs on Wednesday, September 6 as part of the St. Johns Concert in the Park summer music series. The program begins at 7 p.m. at the William E. Tennant Performance Shell in the beautiful St. Johns City Park.
“Yes! The date of September 6 is correct,” says Bill Tennant, concert series chair.
“The band was originally scheduled to perform on June 28, but had to cancel due to poor air quality. Luckily, we have been able to schedule them on the Wednesday after Labor Day, to get their concert in this year.”
The concert features jazz standards and music made popular by Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and many more. “This special band was formed in 1993 by members of the Lansing Concert Band who wanted an opportunity to play the amazing jazz standards and bring this exciting art form to mid-Michigan audiences,” explains concert chair Bill Tennant. “The band members have a passion for excellence and have a wonderful time performing this great music, which comes across in their performance.”
Jim Kasprzak, lead trumpet, directs the dynamic 18-piece group comprised of traditional jazz-era instrumentation. The ensemble also features two local mid-Michigan vocalists, who are no strangers to our St Johns community. Dan Templin and Kelly Sandula-Gruner have performed with the band in previous shell performances, with the Singers on the Grand at the Wilson Center, and also as the duo Clique Vocals on the Brown Bag Concert Series.
The Concert in the Park Series is sponsored by the Clinton County Arts Council and the City of St. Johns. The CCAC receives support from the Michigan Arts & Culture Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Concerts are held rain or shine – there is no admission charge, but donations are gratefully appreciated. The St. Johns Lions Club staff a concession stand offering light refreshments. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy this wonderful concert, the last of the season.

The creative process of mandala making helps to find peace in the universe through balance. Mandalas can be made with a myriad of patterns and designs. It is all up to the artist what the pattern becomes and means to them. Mandalas can also be made simply for the artist to enjoy the process.
