City summer Programs set to begin June 17

The City of St. Johns is offering over 15 summer recreational programs for area youth. Presented by the City Recreational Department, various programs are available to children in grades K-5th, and camps begin June 17.

Soup kitchen makes stops in area

Relay Wrap Up is Monday, June 24

This year’s Relay Wrap Up will be at Depot Pavilion at 5:30 pm on Monday, June 24. They will be handing out awards to teams and sharing feedback about what we liked about Relay and what can be improved. This is a great time to learn about being on committee if you are interested.

From 5:30-6:30 p.m. they will have team wrap-up time, and from 6:30-7:30 p.m. they will have committee wrap up.


Chronic Pain PATH workshop coming up

“Chronic Pain PATH (Personal Action Toward Health) is a 6-week workshop designed for people with chronic pain. In this interactive workshop, people are taught effective tools to better self-manage their condition and its impact on their life.

Managing chronic pain is more than taking medications. We address a variety of topics including fatigue management, dealing with difficult emotions, and pacing and planning. Includes the Moving Easy Program: safe exercises to improve strength, flexibility, and endurance. Caregivers and significant others are also welcome to sign up and attend as active participants. The workshop is free of charge courtesy of Michigan State Medical Society. Pre-registration is required.”

St. Johns on Wednesdays, July 17 – August 21, 2019 from 2:00 – 4:30 p.m.

Summer Fun at CRV

June 17 and 18 All About Water Quality Cost $20
Students will learn how water quality is tested and determined. Once they have mastered the skill, students will travel to various sources of water in the area and will bring back samples to test and make their determinations. A final report will highlight their findings.

Jun 20 and 21 Beginning Media Production Cost $20
Video and media is all the rage. From YouTube and social media to documentaries and informational videos, it is becoming a necessary skill. In this class, students will learn the basics of video, photography, and storytelling. Students will then use their new skills to produce short videos to share with their friend.

Jun 24 – 28 Beginning Robotics Cost $50
Using the Lego RCX robotics system, students will learn the basics of building and programming a robot. This is a self-paced learning environment, which encourages student to learn and explore.

July 1 and 2 Aerospace 2 Day Camp Cost $20This two-day camp teaches students all about aerospace from planes and rockets, to space ship and space travel. Students will have lots of fun building their own planes and rockets and exploring the universe.

July 8 – 12 Intermediate Robotics Cost $50
Using the Lego NXT robotics system, students will expand on their knowledge of building and programming larger robots with even more capabilities. This is a self-paced learning environment, which encourages student to learn and explore.

July 22 – 26 Alternative Energy Cost $75
There many different ways of generating electricity. This event looks at the different ways used in Michigan. Students will travel to explore alternative methods including solar and wind.

August 7 Yankee Air Zoo Cost $35
The Yankee Air Museum provides unique historical and educational experiences through aviation, military, and home front history, such as local history focused on the Willow Run B-24 Bomber Plant. Explore the many exhibits within the museum.

August 12 – 16 Robotics Competition Cost $20
Students who have gone through our robotics classes or have knowledge of Lego Robotics systems can use their knowledge to compete against other robot builders. Work as a team or an individual to create and robot that can perform a list of tasks. Each robot scores points for each activity completed and the amount of time it takes. A final winner will be crown at the end.

Briggs District Library News

S.A.M. in the Summer – Out of this world fun with hands-on participation for children going into grades 2nd thru 5th. Monday, July 15: (grades 2nd and 3rd, 9:30-11:30am) ~ (grades 4th and 5th, 1:00 – 3 p.m.). Registration is required and opens: Monday, June 17th. **Limited to 15 children per grade for each session. It will be messy, creative, interesting, informational and loads of summer fun.

Garden Buddies– Explore and grow with us in the Rae Johnson’s Children’s Garden. We’ll learn about what it takes to grow the food we love to eat. Children ages 7-12 are invited to join us on Monday evenings, July 8-July 29, 5:00-6:30 for a night of digging in the dirt. Registration is required for this program and is open now.

101 Things That Happened on the Mackinac Bridge – Mike Fornes is returning to the library to share stories of the history of the Mackinac Bridge. Monday, June 17, 6:30-7:30. No library card is needed to attend this free program, but registration is appreciated, and is now available.

Cook Me a Story ~ A Fairy Tale Feast! – Recipes inspired by classic Fairy Tales will be retold with a yummy recipe that we will create as a group and enjoy together. Each Session will start with a sensory experience: taste, smell and tactile. Mrs. Daman, Begindergarten Teacher at St. Joseph School will lead us thru the fun of cooking a truly unique fairytale experience that begins with “Once Upon a Kitchen…”, Tuesday, June 18 10:30-11:30 a.m.(ages 4 and 5) will enjoy “Three Little Pigs-In-a-Bundle.” Tuesday, June 18, 1:30-2:30 (ages 5 and 6) will be pleased to learn about “Rapretzel Meets Little Merm-Ade” and on Thursday, June 20, 2:30-3:30 (ages 6 and 7) we will listen to the story “I Really Like Slop by Mo Willems… (not a fairytale)” and create Elephant Ears and Piggy Tails. Registration is required and open right now!

Sky Lab Planetarium – Explore the wonders of the night sky from inside the library when we host this special event! This giant inflatable dome planetarium will be at the library Thursday, June 27 from 6:00-8:00 p.m, consisting of four 30-minute programs. Participants may register for one of the four programs. Space is limited for each program, so registration is required.

Family Movie Fridays – Free movies for the family to enjoy, each Friday, June 14-July 26 (no movie on Friday, July 5). All shows begin at 2:30. A complete list of movies is available on our website. Registration is appreciated, and is now available.

Briggsflix – This summer we’ll be showing space-themed movies for adults and teens. First up on Wednesday, June 19 is the Mel Brooks comedy, Spaceballs. The show starts at 6:30. Registration is required, and is now open.

Exercise Extravaganza– Try out different ways to get your body moving this summer. Children ages 7-11 are invited to join us on Wednesday afternoons, 2:30-3:15 for a chance to experience 5 different energizing exercises. This 6-week series will run from June 19-July 31 (no session on July 3) and participants will be able to sign up for them all or choose what days they want. Sessions will include Cardio Drumming on June 19, Yoga on June 26, Go Noodle on July 10, Karate on July 17, Obstacle Course on July 24, and a Bonus Round on July 31. Registration is required for this program and is open.

Connections – Patrons needing help with OverDrive/Libby, RBDigital, or any of the library’s other e-services will be able to come to the library for drop-in tech help each Wednesday from 2:00-3:00 p.m.

Rep. for a Day essay contest

State Rep. Graham Filler has announced a summer essay contest for students interested in being a “Rep. for a Day”.

The contest is open to students in the 93rd District who are entering the sixth grade. Interested students should write an essay with a length of at least 250 words (approximately one page) with the topic “Why I love and care for my community”. The winner will be selected and invited with their family to the state Capitol in Lansing to be a “Rep. for a Day”.

Entries can be emailed along with a name, email address, mailing address, and phone number to GrahamFiller@house.mi.gov, or mailed to the attention of Rep. Graham Filler at PO Box 30014, Lansing, MI 48909.
