Mint Country Garden Club Meeting
The monthly meeting of Mint Country Garden Club will be held Thursday, May 3, at 7:15 pm.
Nui Forbis will be speaking about Fruit Carving.

CRV CMU-Cedar Point Physics Program
Community Resource Volunteers, in collaboration with Central Michigan University and Cedar Point, will offer a multi-event program aimed at learning more about physics. The events included in this program are:
– A trip to Cedar Point on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, to learn Newton principals on rides. A full day of fun, learning, and rides!
– Two (2) trips to CMU for hands-on learning with CMU students and instructors
– Two (2) additional activities and experiments at the CRV offices

Coed kickball league forming
Get a team together and take it back to the playground days, and play in the City of St. Johns Recreation Departments Coed Kickball League. The kickball league will be played on Monday evenings beginning July 9, 2018. The league will run for seven weeks with a tournament being played in the eighth week. The cost for the league is $125.00 per team which includes umpire fee plus other fees at a discounted rate. The deadline to register for the kickball league is 5:00 p.m. June 14, 2018.
Managers packets for the kickball league may be picked up from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday at the City Offices located on the first floor of the Clinton County Courthouse or downloaded from the website: http://cityofstjohnsmi.com/Departments/Parks-Recreation.

Swiss Steak Supper is May 3
The Eureka Church will be holding a Swiss Steak Supper Thursday, May 3, 2016. Serving will be from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Take-outs are available.
The church is located at 2619 East Maple Rapids Road in Eureka, MI.
Farm Bureau offers scholarships
Eligibility:
1. Youth must be from a Clinton County Farm Bureau Member family.
2. Youth must be pursuing a 2 or 4 year degree program in an agricultural related field with the intent of a lifelong career in agriculture.
3. Youth must possess the qualities of scholarship, leadership and community service.
4. Youth must be entering the 1st or 2nd year of study to apply.
Award Procedures:
1. Clinton County Farm Bureau is giving away monetary awards for outstanding applications
2. Applicants must submit their application by June 1, 2018.
3. The awards will be presented at the county annual meeting.
4. The check will be processed only after submission of a paid registration receipt from an accredited agricultural institution.

Spring Clean-up scheduled – Saturday, May 12
The annual Spring Clean-Up is scheduled for Saturday, May 12, 2018. Please do not place items to the curb earlier then Saturday, May 5, 2018 but must be placed to the curb by 6 am on Saturday, May 12, 2018. Items placed after the contractor has passed through will not be picked up. This is for City residents only whom live in a one to five unit dwelling. City police will be monitoring non-city resident trash dumping. All violators will be prosecuted.
Do put out:
Appliances (Appliances containing any food will not be picked up. Doors must be removed from refrigerator or freezer unit); Electronics (T.V.’s, VCR’s, computer equipment); Lawn Mowers (must be drained of fuel and oil); Hub Caps
Copper and Brass tubing and wire; Large toys; Bicycles; Furniture (indoor and outdoor) and mattresses; Scrap Metal (bed frames, aluminum lawn chairs, file cabinets, etc.); Odd pieces of lumber under 4 ft. long (please bundle); Carpeting (bundles less then 6 ft. long)
Please bag, box, or bundle your items when possible. Limit bags, boxes or bundles to no more than 50 pounds in weight.
Do not put out:
Household trash or recyclables (cans, bottles, etc.); Liquids or hazardous waste; Automobile components; Yard waste including tree stumps; Batteries (lead acid or alkaline batteries can be recycled at City Offices or Bee’s Sports, 2138 S. US-127 BR, St. Johns 989-224-3201); Books, magazines, or newspapers (these can be recycled); Construction or demolition materials from major household repairs; Concrete, bricks, stone or blocks; Dirt piles; Latex paint (can be dried out by using saw dust or kitty litter and then placed into your weekly household green bag collection)

The City of St. Johns will be collecting used car and light truck tires from City residents on Monday, May 14, 2018. Tires must be placed by the curb by 7 am. Each household is limited to 8 tires. Tires must be removed from the rims. No large truck or tractor tires will be collected.

Toddler Storytime – Children ages 2-3 (with a participating adult) are invited to join us on Wednesday mornings at 10:30-11:00 from May 9 through May 30 for a howling good time. We will be exploring zoo animals through stories, music, creative movement, crafts, and games. Registration is required and is now available.
Chef’s Surprise – Come twist yourself into a pretzel on Tuesday, May 22 from 6:00- 7:30. Children ages 7-10 are invited to join us for a night of pretzel making fun. Registration is required and is now available.
Tales to Tails – Free Reading Program with 15 minute sessions for children ages 6-12 to practice reading aloud to Ruger, a certified therapy dog. Summer Schedule: 2nd Thursdays, 6/14, 7/12 and 8/9 from 6:30-7:15. Extra sessions will be considered if time slots fill up. This program encourages confidence and reading skills over the summer in a relaxing environment. Registration is required and begins Thursday, May 17.
Teen Program – Our next teen program is an 80s-themed escape room on Friday, May 11 at 6pm. Teens will be sent back in time to the 1980s, where they will have to work with others to solve puzzles and challenges in order to “escape” the library before time runs out! Registration is required and is now available.
Outdoor Games – Children ages 7-9 are invited to join us on Thursday, June 14 from 6:30-7:30 for a night filled with extra-large, extra fun games. We will be meeting outside at the depot pavilion for this fun filled hour. Registration is required and begins on Thursday, May 17.
Eat Healthy, Eat Local Festival – Come visit our booth, plant a seed for your Mom, and learn more about our Garden Buddies program on Saturday, May 12 from 10-6pm at the Eat Healthy, Eat Local Festival in downtown St. Johns. Take the time to enjoy this free family event and visit with and shop at over 100 Michigan-Made businesses. Cook Me a Story, a Fairy Tale Feast – Join us as fairy tales are retold with a yummy recipe that we will create as a group and enjoy together. “Goldilocks and the Three Pears” Thursday, June 14 10:30-11:30 (ages 4and5). “Sleeping Fruity” Thursday, June 14 1:30-2:30 (ages 5 and 6). “Cinnarella” Thursday, June 21 1:30 -2:30 (ages 6and7). Bookaholics Book Club – The May selection for our adult book club is Prayers For Sale by Sandra Dallas. An instant bond between two women who live in the Depression-era Colorado mountains, results in an unlikely friendship – one in which the deepest of hardships are endured and the darkest memories confessed. Copies of the book are now available. The club meets Thursday, May 17 at the library at 6:30.
Cartoons and Crafts – Tweens ages 8-12 are invited to join us on Thursday, June 7 from 6:30-7:30 for a special program where we will watch a classic Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon, then complete a short, hands-on science experiment. Registration is required and opens on Thursday, May 10.

Leonard announces May office hours
Speaker of the House Tom Leonard, R-DeWitt, will host office hours to meet with local residents and discuss their concerns about state government. Speaker Leonard represents Michigan’s 93rd District.
The coffee hour will take place on Friday, May 11, 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. at Big Boy 1408 Old U.S. 27, St. Johns, MI.
Local residents are encouraged to bring comments, questions and concerns about local government and anything else happening in the local community.
