Mary E. Mills

Mary E. Mills, age 84, passed away at Hazel Findlay Country Manor on Monday, February 10, 2020. Mary was born on November 19, 1935 in St. Johns the daughter of Clinton C. and Thelma A. (Saunders) Purvis. She attended St. Johns Schools and was a homemaker. On April 5, 1958 she married Douglas V. Mills Sr. and he passed away in 1995. Mary loved reading, her family, cooking, being an artist and was a marksman at the target range.

Her children are Mary K. Leffler of Stanton, Joseph D. Mills of Kalkaska, Thelma (Tim) Geer of Maple Rapids, Dennis (Sarah) Mills of Hubbardston, Melissa (Tim) Brewbaker of Grand Ledge and Tressa Lopez of St. Johns; several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by sons Douglas Mills Jr. and Arthur L. Mills, her brother Clinton Purvis and sister Thelma M. Purvis.

The family will receive friends and relatives at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 12, 2020. 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Burial will be at North Star Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at Hope Bible Church in Maple Rapids on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at noon with Pastor Steven Lang officiating.


Melvin W. LeClear

Melvin W. LeClear, 92, of Villa Hills, formerly of Owensboro, KY passed away Tuesday February 4, 2020 at Madonna Manor in Villa Hills. He worked as an Electrical Engineer with General Electric for 33 years. He was a 1945 graduate of Rodney B. Wilson High School in St. Johns. Mel received his engineering degree from Michigan State University, was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was a WWII Navy Veteran.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years Elizabeth LeClear (nee Young), daughter Janet (Bryan) Kanter of Villa Hills, son Kirk (Angela) LeClear of Corpus Christie, TX; five grandchildren Lauren (Ben) Fotsch, Megan and Rachel Kanter and Austin and Hannah LeClear, two great-grandsons, Oliver and Cooper Fotsch. Also surviving is a niece Sherri (Kevin) King. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Berenice LeClear, brother Arlo (Betty) LeClear and granddaughter, Aubrey LeClear.

A memorial service will be held Saturday February 15, 2020 at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow at Madonna Manor Chapel 2344 Amsterdam Rd, Villa Hills, KY 41017. Burial of cremains will be held at the convenience of the family. Melvin F. Crowell

Melvin F. Crowell, age 87, passed away at his home on Saturday, February 8, 2020 surrounded by his family. He was born on October 16, 1932 in St. Johns the son of William F. and Weltha I. (Frayer) Crowell. Melvin graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School in 1951, and served in the U. S. Army. On February 25, 1956 he married Beverly A. Curtis in St. Johns. Mel had worked for the Clinton County Road Commission retiring in 1988. He had also worked at East Lansing Fire Dept for 14 years, Richards Dairy, Herbruck’s Cheese Shop, Midland Ross, R.E. Olds and had delivered mail. He loved rebuilding cars, was a member of First Baptist Church, helped with the buildings at Grove Bible Church, built their home and loved farming.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly, daughters Laura (Chris) Ordway of St. Johns, Annette (Jerry) Peterson of Elsie, and Stacy (Luke) Potter of Charlotte; grandchildren, Jacob (Megan) Peterson, Andrea (Nick) Bancroft, Anna and Grayson Ordway, Hudson, Deidreanna, Tabitha, Phebe, Acacia, Mercy and Boaz Potter. Great grandchildren, Destiny, and Preston Peterson, Paul, David, Levi and Ruby Bancroft; brothers Howard (Ruth) Crowell of Hersey, MI and Roger (Janice) Crowell of St. Johns and sister Mary Jane (Ralph) VanderWerf of Cassopolis, MI.

The family will receive friends and relatives at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home on Friday, February 14, 2020, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Visitation Saturday, February 15, 2020 at the First Baptist Church from 10:00 until service time when a Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Tim Knaus officiating.
