Sheila M. Brock

Sheila M. Brock, beloved mother and friend, died Sunday April 12, 2020 at the age of 86. She was born May 8, 1933 in Farwell, MI the daughter of Olen and Dorothy (Taylor) Witt. Sheila was a graduate of Rodney B. Wilson High School in St. Johns, Class of 1951.

Sheila was a patron of the arts, be it singing, dancing or the theatre she loved them all, so much so that she volunteered as a docent at the Detroit Institute of Arts. She loved MSU and enjoyed everything the campus of Michigan State University offered. Sheila was an avid MSU Spartan hockey fan. She enjoyed working in her flower gardens and loved driving really fast. Sheila retired from the State of Michigan Attorney General’s Office in 1998.

Surviving is a daughter, Cathy Brock of Warren; a son Eric Brock of Ovid; two grandsons, Nick and Hunter and one great grandson, Cooper. Also surviving is her beloved companion of 18 years, Bailey the cat. She was preceded in death by her parents and baby girl Brock.

A funeral service for Sheila will be held at 2:30 PM Friday, April 17, 2020 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns with Pastor Kathy Leydorf-Keck officiating. Private interment will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery in St. Johns. The family will receive relatives and friends from 1:00 PM until service time at the funeral home. In following Governor Whitmer’s Executive Order for COVID-19, gatherings will be limited to no more than 10 persons or less. Those who attend please practice social distancing, keep your time at the visitation as brief as possible and avoid personal contact. In lieu of flowers the family recommends memorials are made to the Capital Area Humane Society, 7095 W. Grand River Ave. Lansing, MI 48906 or City Rescue Mission of Lansing, 607 E. Michigan Ave. Lansing, MI 48912.


Robert L. Mitchell

Robert L. “Bob” Mitchell died Saturday, April 11, 2020 at the age of 92. He was born March 30, 1928 in Detroit, MI the son of Menzo and Alma (Davis) Mitchell. Bob loved spending time at Lake Charlevoix with family and friends. He had a passion for boating, both with a motor and sailing and teaching everyone how to water ski was something he enjoyed greatly. He enjoyed watching and feeding the wildlife in his backyard both at the lake and at his home in St. Johns.

Bob was very fond of a good cup of coffee and a sweet treat. He was a member of Pilgrim United Methodist Church in St. Johns and enjoyed woodworking and hunting. Bob worked for Sears for 48 years as an installer of custom drapery.

Surviving is his wife, Patricia; step-daughter, Kris Clark; three step-sons, Dennis (Pat) Warner, Mark (Kathy) Warner and Roger Warner and four grandchildren, Owen, Emily, Zachary and Nathan. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Shirley, Betty and Ruth.

Following Bob’s wishes cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Pilgrim United Methodist Church 2965 W. Parks Rd. St. Johns, MI. The family was assisted with these arrangements by Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns.


LaVern R. Counseller

Vern Counseller, age 77, passed away April 10, 2020. He was born September 21, 1942 in St. Johns, Michigan. Vern graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School in 1960 and attended Lansing Community College for fire science. He worked for Lansing Fire Department for 27 years, holding the positions of firefighter, EMT, second driver, dispatcher and administrative assistant. After retiring from the fire department in 1992, Vern managed the Comfort Inn in Hart, Michigan, then managed Craig’s Cruisers in Silver Lake, Michigan before moving back to Lansing in 2011 and working at Estes-Leadley Funeral Homes.

Vern is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Margaret; sons, Chris (Terri) Counseller and Tad Counseller; stepchildren, Rick Lone, Robert (Leah) Lone, Ronda (Steve) Pratt; 9 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; and his special cat, Sassey. He was preceded in death by his son, Bob.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lansing Firefighters Local 421, Attn: Honor Guard, 419 S. Washington, Suite 305, Lansing, MI 48933, in memory of LaVern Counseller.
