William A. Washburn Sr.

William A. Washburn Sr. age 81 passed away at Sparrow Hospital on Thursday, August 20, 2020. He was born on September 7, 1938 in Kalamazoo, MI the son of Dudley and Thelma (Bush) Washburn, and had served in the U.S. Army. Bill had worked at Federal Mogul Corp until his retirement. He loved camping, flying remote control airplanes, hunting and fishing.

Bill is survived by sons Geoff (Laura) Washburn and William A. (Chip) Washburn Jr. and daughter Connie (Miguel) Martinez; 11 grandchildren and several great grandchildren; one sister Mary Lou Todd. He was preceded in death by son, Kenneth W. Washburn.

Cremation has taken place and a graveside committal service will be held at Mt. Rest Cemetery at a later date. The family is being served by Keck-Coleman Funeral Home.


Enza Lee Viges

Enza Lee Viges, 85, died at the Midland Hospital surrounded by his wife and children on August 18, 2020. The son of the late Edgar and Mae (Jury) Viges was born March 29, 1935 in St. Johns, MI. He graduated from St. Johns Rodney B. Wilson High School and retired from Dow Chemical Co. in 1992 after a 36-year working career as a tradesman. On October 13, 1956 he married Isabel Motz in Fowler at Holy Trinity Catholic Church and was married 63 years. Enza did volunteer work until his wife Isabel retired and they started traveling. He thoroughly enjoyed spending winters in Arizona for over 25 years where he and Isabel made many acquaintances at their community in Camino Del Rey. Enza was also an avid acrylic painter and golfer. Practicing golf skills and perfecting painting techniques were his favorite past times. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend to many.

Enza is survived by his wife Isabel who shared a loving relationship, his son Craig (Debbie) Viges of Rochester, MI, and four daughters Annette Viges (Steve Swartz) of Holland, MI, Amy (Brian) McPhail of Roscommon, MI, Wendy (Frank) Grotkowski of Midland, and Beth (Marc) St Pierre of Saginaw, MI. Also surviving are eight grandchildren Matthew Miner (Rachel Rivard), Sarah (Dave) de Steiger, Eric Viges (Meghan Sheridan), Drew Viges, Nicholas Swartz (Sarah Pieper), Jacob (Rachel) Swartz, Allissa (Brad) Eiser, and Ben McPhail, 11 great grandchildren Korrina, Dylan, and Brandon Miner, Ethan and Isabella Earl, Eva, Zoe, and Thomas de Steiger, Maggie Mae Eiser, Theo Swartz and Meghan St Pierre, nephews Eric Gruenberg and Mark Stevens, and niece Laurie Stevens, and brother-in-law Billy Robinson. He was preceded in death by parents Edgar and Mae Viges, his older sister, Julaine (Doug) Stevens and younger sister Olene Robinson.

The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, August 21, 2020 from Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 3109 Swede Avenue. Father Rob Howe will officiate with burial to follow in Midland Cemetery. Enza’s family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the Liturgy. Wanda June Upham Humphrey

Wanda June Humphrey passed peacefully, surrounded by family on Saturday, August 15, 2020. Wanda was born to Velma (Salisbury) Upham and Ervin Upham July 2, 1925. She graduated third in her class of seventeen from Maple Rapids High School. She graduated from the Central Michigan University during World War II and often commented on the lack of men on campus. While at CMU she was a member of Theta Sigma Upsilon sorority. After graduation, she was proposed to by two men in the same week.

Impacting the lives of children for over 30 years, Wanda had an extensive teaching career. She taught second grade in Maple Rapids but spent most of her career in St. Johns, MI as the traveling elementary music teacher and middle school girls’ physical education teacher. If you are between the age of 50 and 78 and grew up in St. Johns, you likely had her as a teacher. In the 1950s, she started junior high school dances at the municipal building in St. Johns where she taught kids how to fox trot, swing dance, and jitterbug. Loving kids, she often chaperoned senior trips and band camp at Interlochen, where she also life guarded. Wanda was also beloved among her teaching peers and often mentored and inspired new teachers.

Wanda was an active member of the communities where she lived. She served as President of Clinton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, a founding member of the Elks Rapids Women’s Golf League, and an active member of First Congregational Church of St. Johns and the First Presbyterian Church of Elk Rapids.

Wanda was a lifelong athlete and sports enthusiast. She dedicated most of her career to the physical education and development of sport for girls. She was an avid golfer who hit a hole-in-one in 1990. An excellent dancer, she could always be counted on to take the lead on the dance floor. In her retirement, she taught yoga in Michigan and Florida. In her 60s, she showed off her waterskiing skills to her grandchildren. At 80, she parasailed and bought herself a convertible.

A lover of fashion and the color aqua, Wanda was always dressed beautifully and in style. She loved to socialize and was always the life of the party. Whether she was playing the organ, leading everyone in song or coordinating an activity, you could always count on her to bring the fun. She was loved by all who met her. Her generous spirit, charisma, and love for life was infectious. If you are wondering about the secret to a long life, just follow Wanda’s lead – socialize often, love fiercely, and always be active. She was always up for an adventure!

Wanda lived most of her adult life in St. Johns while summering on Birch Lake in Elk Rapids, MI. She retired in the early 1980s and split her time between Naples, Florida and Elk Rapids, MI.

She is survived by her son Randy (Melanie) Humphrey, grandchildren Kerry Humphrey, Sarah Marshall (David), Emily Humphrey (Mitchell Murray), Brett Flowers (Molly), and Amanda Flowers. She is also survived by her ten great grandchildren Madeline, Jonathan, Benjamin, Lauren, Anna Grace, Sienna, Aria, Luccio, Burke, and Anabelle. She spent the last 16 years sharing her life with her partner, George Zambo. Together they traveled, laughed, and provided each other with love and companionship in the later years of their lives. She was preceeded in death by her husband Myron Humphrey, daughter Sue Ellen Flowers and her son Todd Michael Humphrey.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made on her behalf to the St. Johns Athletic Department 501 W. Kevin J. Fedewa

On August 15, 2020 after a courageous 21 month battle with kidney cancer, Kevin Fedewa’s suffering is now over as he is greeted by our Savior at the gates of heaven. He fought with grace and class every step of the way as he taught our children how to accept life’s challenges with faith and trust in God.

He was born April 10, 1963 to Joseph and Janice (Wieber) Fedewa. He graduated from Pewamo-Westphalia High School in 1981. He earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Ferris State University and an MBA from Grand Valley State University. He married Lou Ann Fedewa on October 7, 1989 and together they shared over 30 years of marriage and were blessed with four children. Kevin spent the first half of his career in banking and the second half traveling the world making private equity investments for the Michigan Department of Treasury, Bureau of Investments. He truly loved his job and continued to work until he literally could not do it anymore. Kevin was an active member of St. Gerard Catholic Church and a board member for Cristo Rey. He was loved for his great sense of humor, integrity, and kind heart. He will be sorely missed by many.

Surviving are his wife, Lou Ann Fedewa; children, Lindsay, Garrett, Tara, and Derek Fedewa; mother, Janice Fedewa; siblings, Joe (Mary) Fedewa, sister-in-law, Carol Bearss Fedewa, sister, Janell (Kurt) Thelen; in-laws, Jay Fedewa, Jerry (Theresa) Fedewa, and Patrick Fedewa; and 14 nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death are his father, Joe Fedewa; brother, Darryl Fedewa; in-laws, Norm and Lorraine Fedewa.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, August 19, 2020 and 4-8 p.m. Thursday, August 20, 2020 at St. Mary’s Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia Street, Westphalia. The Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated by Fr. John Klein, Fr. Matthew Fedewa (uncle), and Fr. Fred Thelen (first cousin) at 10:30 a.m., Friday, August 21, 2020 at St. Gerard Catholic Church, Lansing. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Lansing. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary’s or St. Gerard School in honor of Kevin. Arrangements are entrusted to Lehman Funeral Homes. Jeanette Catherine Botti

Jeanette Catherine (Thelen) Botti – of Flint, MI, age 94, peacefully passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2020. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 12 PM Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 5199 Richfield Road, Flint, MI 48506; Rev. Fr. Roy Horning celebrant. Interment immediately following the Mass in New Calvary Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive visitors 11 AM-12 PM Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan Flint Service Center or the Flint Area Council of Catholic Women, in Jeanette’s memory.

Jeanette was born in Fowler, MI on October 20, 1925, daughter of the late Roman and Magdelen (Witgen) Thelen. She married Lawrence Botti on July 28, 1956 at Holy Trinity Church in Fowler, MI. After graduating as valedictorian from Fowler High School, Jeanette attended Siena Heights College where she earned a Bachelor of Education. In 1958 Jeanette furthered her education attending the University of Michigan, earning a master’s degree in Education. Jeanette was very active in a variety of activities including, camping, canoeing, golfing, bowling (winning a trophy on her bowling team), traveling, including trips to Europe and the Holy Land. She regularly played Bridge and was a member of various Bridge Clubs. For over 35 years, Jeanette actively worked with girl’s associations, including working with the Girl Scouts.

She was also an active member of many organizations including, Holy Rosary Catholic Church since Christmas of 1967, where she was involved in preparing many funeral luncheons, the Holy Rosary Altar Society, where she held various offices, a member of Stephen Ministry as one of three parishioners she received training in the ministry and then aided Holy Rosary Parish in developing a ministry program of their own, President of the Holy Parish School, member of the Council of Catholic Women – Diocese of Lansing and a member of the Flint Area Chapter serving for many years as vice president and then two years as president.

She deeply loved her church and her family, which were the core of her life.

Jeanette is survived by her husband of 64 years, Larry Botti; 3 daughters, Alicia Botti, Valerie (Dr. Algirdas) Vaitas and Sharon (Michael Waterlander) Botti; 3 granddaughters, Catherine Vaitas, Natalie Vaitas and Madeline Vaitas; 2 sisters, Marie Gagnon and Elaine (John) Partenio; many other loving family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roman and Magdelen Thelen; infant daughter, Mary Dolores Botti.

The family would like to extend a very sincere thank you to Mickey and Tina who were Jeanette’s caregivers for several years and showed her so much love, kindness and friendship. Thank you to Kindred Hospice and to all caregiver professionals for providing professional and compassionate care.

Katherine Hufnagel

Katherine “Kay” Hufnagel passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2020, at the age of 81. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who loved her family dearly.

Kay was born in Fowler, February 23, 1939, the daughter of Joseph and Katherine (Zimmerman) Koenigsknecht. She graduated from Fowler High School in 1957 and was class valedictorian. Kay was a lifelong, committed member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fowler where she was a past president of the Christian Mothers and member of the Most Holy Trinity Educational Trust. She had a strong devotion to prayer and to her Catholic faith, the source of the immense love that she willingly and selflessly shared.

Kay was a great cook and baker. She took great joy in her fantastic family dinners, holiday gatherings, and the activities of her children and grandchildren. She was an exquisite quilter and loved making quilts for family members and the community. The friendship of her neighbors, TOPS members, and Halls Lake friends meant a great deal to her.

Kay had several jobs during her working career. She worked for the State of Michigan for a short time, was a bus driver for Fowler Public Schools for 18 years, and worked in the Clinton County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for 13 years. She worked hard for her family and community; and did so with determination, perseverance, and a can-do attitude that was inspiring to all.

On June 17, 1961 she married Frank Hufnagel who survives her. Also surviving are three sons, Neil (Anne), Luke (Cindy) and Matt (Tori); thirteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her siblings, Roy (Marilie) Koenigsknecht, Bob (Pat) Koenigsknecht, MaryAnn (Roger) Kaminskis, Jane Fox, Luke (Rosemary) Koenigsknecht, and Don (Colleen) Koenigsknecht; in-laws, Judy Koenigsknecht, Esther Eiseler, Clem and Marie Hufnagel, Marlene Hufnagel, Mary Hufnagel, Helen Hungerford, and Jim and Carrie Hufnagel. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Carl and Joe Koenigsknecht; granddaughter, Amber Rose Hufnagel; in-laws, Fran and Celeste Heckman, John Eiseler, Tom and Nancy Hufnagel, Charles Hufnagel, Wesley Arnold and Ken Hungerford.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 AM Monday, August 17, 2020, at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fowler, with Rev. Fr. Dennis Howard as Celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends 6-8 PM on Saturday, August 15, and 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Sunday, August 16, at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns. A Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 PM Sunday at the funeral home. Those in attendance for visitation and Mass will be expected to follow current COVID-19 protocols and wear face coverings and practice social distancing. Memorials may be made to Most Holy Trinity Educational Trust Fund.
