Introduces new director
September is Senior Center month so on Thursday, September 16 from 6-8 pm the Senior Center will host a free Ice Cream Social. The Board hopes seniors that have never come to the center before will drop by for some ice cream and a free tour of the facility. It will be a great chance to see what’s going on each day and to give input of what is needed, especially for younger seniors. The social will also give everyone the opportunity to meet the center’s new director Gary Carpenter and various Board members.
October the center will undertake three fundraising activities. On Thursday, October 8 they will hold their 8th Annual Rock-a-Thon. Members and friends of the center get donations and then spend the day playing bingo and games, eating lunch, telling stories and much more, all while rocking in a rocking chair. If you would like to participate as a rocker or would like to contribute in any other way, contact their fundraising chair Brenda Terpening at 989-224-7248.
On Sunday, October 24 the center will hold an Antiques Roadshow. Between 1-5 pm you can bring items to the center to have them appraised by Glen Rairigh. Mr. Rairigh is a nationally known and respected auctioneer/appraiser who has been in the antique and art business for 40 years. He is a graduate of Central Michigan University, owner and supervising auctioneer of Americana Auctions, Inc., and an active consulting contributor to Schroeder’s Antiques Price Guide. The cost will be $5 per item. Stamps, coins and jewelry will not be appraised that day.
Finally, the Board members and staff of the center will be selling their 2011 calendar. Entitled “Senior’s and their Pets”, the calendar will feature senior members of the center, along with their pets (or in some cases a borrowed pet) at a sponsoring business location. Photographs in the calendar will be provided by Jim Ortman of Ortman Photography. The calendars will sell for $10 each and will be available from Board members, at the Senior Center and various businesses throughout the community.
In addition to these specific activities, the center will continue to have fundraising lunches each Monday ($5 per person, served between 11:30 am to 12:30 pm), Bake Sales on Sep 18, Oct 16, Nov 13 and Dec 4 and their new Gift Shop will be open anytime you want to stop by and shop between 9 am – 3 pm on Mon, Tue, Wed or Fri. At the Gift Shop you can get great new items (many obtained from a closed Hallmark store) and some gently used donated items.
If you have any questions about these or other fundraising events for the center, please contact Brenda Terpening at 989-224-7248. If you have any questions about daily activities at the center, call Gary Carpenter at 989-224-4257.
