Fifth-grader wins logo contest

Carson City Hospital’s 75th anniversary logo design contest
In 2011, Carson City Hospital will be celebrating 75 years of serving the health-care needs of the community. As part of the celebration and to encourage participation from local students, the hospital sponsored a 75th Anniversary Logo Design Contest, open to all students in the hospital’s service area.
On Dec. 17, Carson City Hospital’s Vice President Matt Thompson and Public Relations Manager Jennifer Churchill visited Central Montcalm Upper Elementary (CMUE) in Stanton to award the winner of the contest – 5th-grader Michelle Teegardin – with a bagful of prizes, a laminated certificate and a $100 gift card.
The award was given “live” on the school’s closed-circuit morning television broadcast, with an introduction by Principal Susan Koster and a surprise visit by art teacher Janet Suydam, who had encouraged all of her students, including Teegardin, to participate in the contest. Michelle’s mother, Jessica, was also able to attend the award presentation.
“We had approximately 600 submissions to the contest,” said Churchill, noting that a hospital committee that included Emergency Department physician Dr. Christopher Herald chose the winning logo. “It was not an easy decision because so many students used amazing creativity and came up with some really great designs. But Michelle’s design just worked perfectly with our plans for celebrating our 75th anniversary.”
There were 10 honorable mention awards given, as well, including to two CMUE students who were also honored during the Dec. 17 presentation: Angie DeJohn and Darren Lillie. The other eight honorable mentions were: Caitlin Miller and Ashley Kremsreiter of Palo Community Schools; Tanner Allison of Portland High School; Kyle Kieffer of Clinton County RESA; Makenzie Nemeth of Alma High School; and Kirsten Andrews, Draven Davis, and Gabriel Isaac Geselman, all of Carson City-Crystal Upper Elementary.
The winning logo design concept has been given the “professional treatment” according to Churchill, and has been created in a high-resolution, electronic format by Rizzi Designs of Lansing for use in printed materials and online throughout 2011.
“We also have posted the original designs by the top 10 submissions on our hospital Facebook page,” said Churchill. “And we’ll be putting Michelle’s name in lights, so to speak, by announcing her as the winner on several billboards next to a professional rendering of her design throughout the community this month.”
