Auxiliary joins efforts to brighten Orphans’ lives

Cusco, Peru on March 23rd
A contingent of members from First Congregational Church in St. Johns, headed by Dr. Dave Minnick, will be heading for Cusco, Peru on March 23rd to work among the children residing in orphanages located in that city. Part of the mission includes delivery of at least 100 hand-made backpacks, assembled by area residents for gifts to the children.

At last count, the effort was closing in on the goal of 100 backpacks, when 17 members of Sparrow Clinton Hospital Auxiliary joined the undertaking by spending an evening sewing and piecing fabric together. A force of three sewing machines and many nimble fingers completed the assembly of 15 backpacks in a matter of a little over three hours, based on instructions and design provided by the group making the trip.
The sewing bee was coordinated by Auxiliary co-president Shelley Gunther who suggested the project to members. “This was something that not only fell within the Auxiliary’s slate of activities,” Ms Gunther said, “but it was also a community endeavor. Members of the hospital staff were part of the mission and our members felt committed to the purpose.”
All fabric, thread and materials were contributed by individual Auxiliary members.
