The Candy Stripers program was created in New Jersey in 1944 and reached its peak of popularity in the 1960s through 1980s. It was set up for girls ages 13 to 18 to give them an opportunity to learn and socialize while helping the regular nursing staff by delivering meals, packages, flowers, and mail, and providing TVs and radios to those who wanted them.

Candy stripers got their name from the red and white stripped uniforms they wore. They had to go through several weeks of training as well as getting health exams and TB test to protect the health of the patients.
The program disappeared in the 1980s.
