Sixth grader wins essay contest

Megan Curtin
St. John Knights of Columbus Council #3281 accepted the challenge, as they have during the past years, of sponsoring the annual State Essay Contest for the St Joseph Catholic School sixth graders. This year’s essay topic was “Who is Your Role Model and Why”?
Twenty nine young authors submitted well written and insightful essays in pursuit of first or second place prize. The first place author will receive a $100.00 US Savings Bond and the second place prize is a $50.00 US Savings Bond. Because this year’s essay were so well written the council decided to recognize the third and fourth place authors with a $10.00 gift certificate.
Grand Knight Michael Trebesh and Past Grand Knight Dean Hartenburg had the difficult task of evaluating and ranking these superb essays. After many hours of re-reads, discussion and reflection Mr. Trebesh and Mr. Hartenburg identified Megan Curtin’s essay “Jesus, My Blessed Example” as the best essay and Hannah Wells’s essay “A Role Model to Me” as the very close second place essay.
Copies of Megan’s and Hannah’s essay were mailed to the K of C State youth director for possible State honor. Last Year, Morgan Weber’s essay “ The Role Prayers Plays In My Life” not only took first place locally but was also recognized as number one in the State.
Parents, teachers and the Knights of Columbus are proud of the 29 fine young adults who submitted an essay. We commend them for their thoughts, time and efforts invested in writing their fantastic essays.
