1964 Soap Box Derby

The history of the Soap Box Derby started in Dayton, Ohio in 1934 and the very next year was moved to Akron. Chevrolet sponsored the race from 1935 to 1972 and offered scholarships as prizes.
The Derby reached its peak of popularity during the 1950s and 1960s.
In 1964 Alan Smith, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. Aloysius Smith, drove his soap box derby car to the championship. Robert Schaefer finished seconhd and Gary Roach was third. All of the boys were from Westphalia.
