Cast members rehearse a tense moment in a scene from Steel Magnolias, a comedy-drama to be staged by Homegrown. The setting includes roles played by, from left, Sandra Thomasson, Bev Gross, Susan DeRosa and Beth Webb.
The comedy-drama “Steel Magnolias,” a play prompted by real life experience of its author, Robert Harling, will be presented by Homegrown Productions on two consecutive weekends beginning March 8. Harling’s younger sister, Susan, died from diabetes; and writing about his feelings of her passing was a coping method.
The play depicts a group of seemingly frail southern belles who, tough as steel, deal with an abundance of complex relationships and emotions. The magnolia refers to a magnolia tree the group is arguing about as the play opens.
Tom Webb, who is among the original members of Homegrown Productions, is directing the performance with Susan Mahoney serving as producer. The roles of Truvy, Annelle, Clairee, Shelby, M’Lynne and Louisa (Ouiser) will be played by, respectively, Susan DeRosa, Amanda Garner, Sandra Thomasson, Marci Balogh, Beth Webb and Bev Gross.
The first presentation will be Thursday March 8 at 7:30 p.m. Following performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday March 9 and Saturday March 10. A Sunday matinee, March 11, will begin at 2 p.m. The following weekend, shows will be held Saturday March 17 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday March 18 at 2 p.m. All shows will be staged in the auditorium of the Wilson Center and proceeds from the play will be directed toward the continuing restoration of that facility.
General admission is $10.00 per person.
“Steel Magnolias” is being presented though special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc. of New York, NY. Homegrown Productions, organized by Susan DeRosa and Beth Webb, is an activity of Clinton County Arts Council.
