School starts Sept. 4 amid big changes for SJ students

St. Johns School Board Treasurer Rick Drabek shows some fancy footwork on the balance beam during a Board walk-through of the new construction at St. Johns High School.
It’s back to school for students at St. Johns Public Schools next Tuesday, Sept. 4, as classes begin for the 2012-13 school year.
Along with all the new faces of incoming freshman, lots of other changes will greet students at St. Johns High School – like spacious science and math classrooms in the new academic addition, renovations to hallways and in the industrial arts areas, and revamped offices by the new front entrance.
Plenty of other changes await students and staff throughout this year and next: completion of additional new classrooms in the academic wing when school resumes in January 2013 after the holiday vacation; major remodeling of existing classrooms throughout the building, auditorium and the media center; and construction of a new cafeteria and kitchen, competition gym and swimming pool.
Change is equally evident outside the high school and across the high school/middle school campus – like the new football field where the Redwings face Corunna Thursday, Aug. 30, in the first game at the new facility. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.; kickoff is at 7.
Ticket booths are located at the entrance on the south side of the field near the corner of Morton and Sickels streets. Concessions and restrooms are located in the Rotary Building that has been completely remodeled and enlarged.
