Jeffrey Hartsuff, Sr.
Jeffrey Hartsuff, Sr. age 58, passed away August 26, 2012, at his home in Ovid, Michigan. Jeff was born October 28, 1953 in St. Johns, Michigan. He was the son of Kenneth and Dawn (Hemingway) Hartsuff. Jeff married Catherine “Chris” Steele on April 17, 1976 in Ovid, Michigan and she survives him. Jeff was a Team Leader at G.M., avid lover and collector of vintage Mustangs and he loved woodworking.
In addition to his wife, Jeff is survived by their children, James (Bobbie) Hartsuff, Rae-Ann Hartsuff, Beau Hartsuff, Angel Hartsuff, Jeffrey Hartsuff II, Shawn Hartsuff, Scott Hartsuff, Jacob Hartsuff, grandchildren, Cora Hartsuff, Flint Hartsuff, Caden Soliz-Hartsuff, his sisters, Janet (Carl) Galecka, Barb (Bruce) Hale, one brother, Doug (Clarice) Hartsuff, two beloved dogs, Boss and Cobi, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Dawn Hartsuff.
Funeral Services will be held, 12:30 P.M. Thursday August 30, 2012 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes in Ovid, Michigan. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 10 A.M.-12:00 P.M. Thursday prior to the funeral. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations will be made to a charity of his family’s choice. The family is being served by the Osgood Funeral Homes.
Sue Ellen (Humphrey) Flowers
Sue Ellen Flowers, age 64, of Williamsburg passed away Wednesday, August 22, 2012. She was born October 18, 1947 in Alma to Myron (Mike) and Wanda (Upham) Humphrey. She was a 1965 graduate of St. Johns’ school and earned her Bachelor’s in Elementary Education from Central Michigan University, where she was involved in the cheer leading squad. She went on to receive her Masters degree in Curriculum Instruction.
On June 15, 1968 Sue married Larry Flowers in St. Johns. Together they raised 2 children. She taught in the Hartland Consolidated School district for 30 years. Upon retirement Sue and Larry moved to Williamsburg. She was an active member of the P.E.O., an Elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Elk Rapids, President of the Habitat for Humanity of Antrim County for 6 years, and a member of several bridge groups. Sue also enjoyed yoga, any type of arts and crafts, and was an amazing decorator. She will be fondly remembered for her incredible cooking and entertaining.
Sue will be greatly missed by her husband Larry, mother Wanda Humphrey of Elk Rapids, children: Brett (Molly) Flowers of Evansville, IN and Amanda Flowers of Traverse City, 2 grandchildren: Burke and Anabelle; a brother Randy (Melanie) Humphrey of Estes Park, CO, 3 nieces and a brother-in-law Steven Flowers of Brighton. She was preceded in death by her father Mike Humphrey and a brother, Todd Humphrey.
A memorial service will be held Monday, August 27, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 404 Spruce St., Elk Rapids. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Habitat for Humanity of Antrim County, 306 South Williams St., Mancelona MI 49659. Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Home of Elk Rapids
Gordon C. Love
Gordon C. Love, 68 of Okemos, MI died on Saturday, August 25, 2012. Gordon was born on Sept. 6, 1943 in Ovid, MI the son of Elwin and Elsie (Tillapaw) Love. He graduated from Ovid High School with the class of 1961. He married Judith Ripley on December 28, 1973 in Ovid and was in sales of security systems until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife Judy, daughters Robin and Julie; grandsons Chay and Cullen Menke; great granddaughter Tiffany and 2 great grandsons; Mother, Elsie Bowerman of Ovid and brothers Larry (Marilyn) Love of Ovid and Dennis (Sharry) Love of Whitehall and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, brother Rodney Love and Step son Johnny Ripley.
The family will receive friends and relatives at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns, MI on Wednesday, August 29, 2012, 11:00 A.M. until service time at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Tim Dickenson officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Ovid. Memorials may be made to Judy’s health care or First Baptist Church.
Jessie Vallejo
Jessie Vallejo (Salazar) of St. Johns, MI died peacefully at his home on Thursday, August 23, 2012 at the age of 70. He was born on June 3, 1942 in San Antonio, TX, the son of Bertha Vallejo Salazar. Jessie was self-employed and skilled in many areas. Jessie loved spending time with family, shooting pool and going to the casino, but most of all he enjoyed helping people and would go above and beyond to help others in need. He loved to make people laugh with his silly sense of humor.
In 1990 he met his soul-mate and partner, Nancy Cashen and she survives him. Also surviving are two sons; Jessie Jr. and Roger Guerrero and families of San Antonio, TX, Nancy’s children; Michelle Robbins and family of St. Johns, Monica Rollins and family of McKenzie, TN, Matt Aylor and family of Montague, one sister Mary Salazar and special friend Dennis Cole of St. Johns, brothers; Joe (Dawn) Salazar of Lansing, Roy (Trisha) Salazar of DeWitt, Jim (Inez) Salazar of TX and David and Regino Salazar of TX. Many nieces and nephews and many close friends. Jessie was preceded in death by 2 brothers; Rudy Guerrero of TX and John Salazar of Louisiana.
A graveside service and burial will take place at Mt. Rest Cemetery in St. Johns, on Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012 at 2:00 p.m., family and friends are welcome. Please join the family for dinner at 4:00 p.m. at the Meadows Clubhouse, 2265 W. Parks Rd., St. Johns, MI.

Samuel J. Serrell
Samuel John Serrell, age 89, of Elk Rapids passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. He was born July 12, 1923 in Rochester, MI. Sam graduated with his bachelor’s degree in education from Purdue University. He then went on to further his education at Michigan State University, where he received his Masters degree in Education Administration. He also had several hours of study beyond his Masters.
On January 9, 1953 Sam married Bernice Louise Findley on Kodiak Island, Alaska. Sam taught and was a principal for the St. Johns Junior High until his retirement. Sam and Bernice were summer residents of Elk Rapids for several years prior to Sam’s retirement. While spending their summers in Elk Rapids, they owned and operated the Birch View Cottages. Upon retirement and their permanent move to Northern Michigan they sold the cottages and enjoyed over 30 years in Elk Rapids.
Sam spent his leisure time gardening, golfing, fishing, hunting and wood working. He enjoyed collecting antiques, dolls, photos and scrapbook memorabilia. He authored two autobiographical books. Sam was also available to help others. Sam was an active lifetime member of the Lions Club, a member of Elk Rapids Golf Club, and he drove ambulance for 14 years for Elk Rapids Rescue. In 1974 Sam was awarded the Founder’s Award for his involvement in the community.
Sam is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Bernice; children: Sharon Knight of Central Lake, Larry (Barbara) Serrell of Beaverton, and Gary (Beth) Serrell of Elk Rapids; 6 grandchildren: Danielle (Ron) Fillmore, Tim Knight, Michael (Sherry) Knight, Stacey Serrell, Scott (Debbie) Serrell, and Lyndsey Serrell; 12 great grandchildren; brother Joe Serrell and sister Becki (Benny) Yih. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Sam was preceded in death by his mother Hazel Serrell, sister Barbara Nolan, and brother Dick Serrell.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 25, 2012 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Elk Rapids, with visitation 1 hour prior. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to the Elk Rapids Rescue or charity of donor’s choice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Home of Elk Rapids.
MaryAnn (Fox) Fabiano
MaryAnn (Fox) Fabiano of Lansing. God called our loving wife, mother and grandmother to his eternal rest on August 22,, 2012, after a 25-year battle with cancer. She was met by her parents, John and Mary (Caudy) Fox, her grandparents’, Joseph and Anna Fox and Alphonse and Agnes Caudy and her brother John Fox. She was born March 15, 1936 in St Johns, Michigan. MaryAnn grew up in Fowler, Michigan and in 1945, the family moved to Lansing.
MaryAnn graduated from Resurrection High School in 1954 and from Mercy School of Nursing in 1958. She worked as a nurse at St. Lawrence Hospital, Dr. Ralph Carlson’s office, and in Hematology/Oncology at MSU Clinical Center and Breslin Cancer Center. She was the founder of the MSU Lymphedema Clinic with Dr. Nicklay Dimitrov, MD. On Sept. 13, 1958, she married James Fabiano at Church of the Resurrection. MaryAnn and Jim loved to travel. They went to Europe, Alaska, and Canada. MaryAnn loved quilting, gardening, cooking and baking, especially for her family. She was a member of St. Gerard Church and Guild, Greater Lansing Nursing Society and Oncology Nursing Society. She served as past President of the Lansing Area Patchers and the Bretton Woods Garden Club.
She is survived by her husband, James, and their children, Jane and Jerry Turner and their daughter Rachel of Rockford; Mike and Sharon Fabiano and their children, Amanda, James, Chelsea and Michelle of Lansing; JoAnn and Bill Backus and their daughters, Alyssa and Mari of Lansing. Her siblings, Ellen and Bob Smith, Joseph and Pam Fox, Jane and Mike Quintieri and Judy and Mike Leftwich, her aunts, Therese VanWormer, Marguerite Klein, Agnes Brown and Esther Young and her uncle, Joseph Caudy, her quilting friends, and her nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends and co-workers.
The family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses and staff of Breslin Cancer Center, especially Dr. Tamkus, the 2 South East staff at McLaren Hospital and St. Lawrence Hospice House of Mid-Michigan.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, August 25, 2012 at 10:00a.m. at St. Gerard Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. John Klein as celebrant. A luncheon will follow. Rite of committal will be Saturday at 1:30p.m. at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery, Fowler, MI. Visitation is Friday, 4-8p.m. at the Palmer Bush and Jensen Family Funeral Homes, Delta Chapel, 6020 W. Saginaw where the Rosary will be prayed at 7:30p.m. Visitation continues Saturday at the church beginning at 9:00a.m. Memorials can be made to her Lymphedema Rehabilitation Medicine Clinic, Code AS19, c/o Tricia Bradford, 965 Fee Hall Road, Room A310, East Lansing, MI, 48824 or St. Gerard Catholic School,4433 W.
