Memorial Day comment
We want our local veteran organizations to know how much we appreciate their efforts, not only in serving their country but also in serving our area now in many ways.
We think it is particularly meaningful that they prefer to recognize Memorial Day on May 30, the date that was originally established to honor those who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Thus the Memorial Day parade, in which many veterans march or ride, is always held on May 30 in St. Johns.
Also on May 30 and five other dates each year the American Legion Flag Tribute to Veterans graces Mt. Rest Cemetery with a display of 560 large flags commemorating area veterans who have died. The flags are put up at 8:00 AM by veterans, their families and other volunteers, and taken down at 7:00 PM. It is an incredibly moving sight.
