Students arriving at St. Johns High School for the first day of classes Sept. 3 should expect to be a bit dazed and confused – and totally geeked – by the transformation of the building they left this past June.
Lots of work happened over the summer break:
· Completion of renovations around the revamped media center that features larger-sized classrooms and a locker commons area;
· Relocation of art classrooms to the “old” cafeteria where the large windows provide wonderful, natural light;
· A new locker commons area where the “old” art rooms had been located by the high school main entrance and office;
· Relocation of the band room to the “old” swimming pool area that includes practice spaces for music students, and renovations to previous band/orchestra/choir rooms for use by orchestra and choir students;
· New cafeteria and servery that includes four, separate lunch lines which will speed up delivery and accommodate more students at each lunch period;
· Completion of new construction on the west side of the building for physical education programs and athletic events including a separate athletic entrance and “SJ Spirit Shop,” new competition gym and locker rooms, and new competition pool and lockerrooms that are accessible for community use and community swim programs.
Renovation is continuing in the auditorium and surrounding spaces that will be used for set design and storage; on target for completion in November. Exterior site work, including paving and finishing parking lots, is continuing and will be finished by the start of school.
