Everett Glazier
by Barry Bauer

Everett Glazier became St. Johns police chief after the sudden death of then police chief, Reed A. Hall, in June, 1949 at the age of 59. Chief Glazier started with the dept in 1936 as a patrolman.
Glazier recalled a time when there were only two police officers on the force. They had to use their own cars and were reimbursed $10 a week. “There was no central office and police and fire calls were received at the Waterworks. Notes and records were filed only in the officer’s pockets.”
The police department worked out a succession of locations including above the old fire hall, the Municipal Building, to below Bement Library, and finally to its current location on State St. when the City bought the old Shell gas station and renovated it.

Glazier retired June 1, 1973 and handed over the chief of police badge to Lyle French
Everett Glazier passed away in May, 1974.
Thanks to the St. Johns Police Dept. and especially April Wilson for their help.
