Lynda J. Simon
Lynda J. Simon, of Houghton Lake, MI and formerly of St. Johns, died October 1, 2013 at the age of 70. Born June 2, 1943 in St. Johns, she was the daughter of Lynn and Evelyn (Diller) Heinlen. Lynda was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns. On June 23, 1962 she married Eugene Simon in St. Johns, and he survives her.
Also surviving are her children; Brent (Carrie) Simon of Dallas, TX, Curtis (Dot) Simon of Folly Beach, SC, Tamie (Dennis) Parks of Maple Rapids, MI, Jamie (Rob) Benbow of Fortville, IN, Kari (Rick) Pieters of St. Johns, Heidi (Matt) Martens of St. Johns, Chad (Amy) Simon of St. Johns, and Chip (Jaclyn) Simon of Atlanta, GA; 20 grandchildren; sister, Ellen Huss; brother, Paul Halstead; and many nieces and nephews. Lynda was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Raymond and Roger Heinlen and Jack Halstead; and grandson, Brandon Simon.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, October 5, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns with Fr. Michael Williams presiding. Burial will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery in St. Johns. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6-8 PM and Friday from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at Osgood Funeral Home in St. Johns. A vigil service will be held at 7PM Friday with a rosary service immediately following at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Houghton Lake Senior Community Center, 2625 South Townline Rd., Houghton Lake, MI 48629.
Luella E. Minor
Luella E. Minor died Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at the age of 88. She was born February 22, 1925 in Onaway, MI the daughter of Herman and Bessie (Gilmartin) Roberts. Luella worked for the State of Michigan in the Treasury Department, retiring after 27 years of service.
Surviving is one daughter, Carla (Clark) Berkhousen; three grandchildren, Christine (Tim) Cleaver, Carrie (Jarrod) Workman and Cory (Tristen) Berkhousen and six great grandchildren, Austin and Jamison Cleaver, Logan and Peyton Workman and Madison and Callie Berkhousen all of St. Johns. She was predeceased by husbands, Ernest J. Christiansen and R. C. “Doc” Minor.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Friday, October 4, 2013 at the chapel at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens 4444 W. Grand River Ave. Lansing. The family will receive relatives and friends 2-4 and 6-8 PM Thursday, October 3 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns. Memorials may be made to Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor 1101 S. Scott Rd. Herbert D. Beeman
Herbert D. Beeman, 74, of Ovid, retired machinist, died Saturday September 28, 2013.
Services will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Osgood Funeral Homes, St. Johns.
Harold D. Shane, O.D.
Harold D. Shane, O.D. died Saturday, September 28, 2013 at the age of 87. He was born January 19, 1926 in Grand Ledge, MI the son of Charles Sr. and Edith (McConnell) Shane. Harry was a former member of the Congregational Church in St. Johns and the St. Johns-Ovid Masonic Lodge and currently is a member of the Michigan and American Optometric Association. He was a member of the former St. Johns Exchange Club and Clinton County Country Club and served in the Navy during WWII. Harry was an optometrist in St. Johns from 1950 until his retirement in 1988. On October 28, 1950 he married Donna Baker and she survives him.
Also surviving is one daughter, Sue (Greg) Crawley of Lansing; one son, Jim (Laura) Shane of Crestview, FL; grandchildren, Jeff Crawley and Meg Campbell-Crawley, Danielle (Chris) Cole, Kristen Shane and Michael Shane; four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Chad and his twin Jerry.
The family will receive relatives and friends during a time of fellowship and celebration of Harry’s life on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns. Memorials may be made to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan P.O. Box 30480 Lansing, MI 48909-9986.
Leroy A. Thomas
Leroy (Lee) A. Thomas, 61 went home to be with his Lord on Friday, September 27, 2013 at Ovid Healthcare Center in Ovid. Leroy was born on August 21, 1952 the son of William and Ruby Opal (Brauher) Thomas. He graduated from Ovid Elsie High School in 1971. He enjoyed Little League Coaching and was a big fan of the Detroit Tigers. Leroy was a loving family man who enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Leroy is survived by his children, Jeffery (Cathy) Thomas of St. Johns, Nicole (William) Seeley of St. Johns, Lindsay (Lance) Pittman of Westphalia and Clifford Thomas of Montague, MI; brothers and sisters, Jean (Maynard) Decker of TX, Nancy (David) Hulliberger, Ray (Donna) Thomas of TX, Grace (Jim) Loynes, Leona (John) Grady, Alma (Rich) Conklin all of MI; 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Brenda Thomas of St. Johns and by many nieces and nephews. Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, brother William L. and infant grandson, William N. Seeley.
Memorial services will be held at Church of the Living Word, 1100 N. Ovid Rd., Ovid, MI 48866 on Friday, October 4, 2013 with Pastor Audie Clairmont officiating at 1:00 P.M. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to his family. Arrangements are provided by Keck-Coleman Funeral Home.
