Severe complications from the flu found in those younger than two years of age
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently published results of a study in which all (830) confirmed flu-associated pediatric deaths reported between 2004 and 2012 were analyzed.
While we’ve long known that young children with chronic conditions (asthma, chronic lung disease, neurodevelopmental disorders, etc.) are at high risk for developing serious and sometimes life-threatening flu complications, the CDC study revealed something more.
The CDC found that of those with a known medical history, forty-three percent had no high-risk medical conditions. This emphasizes the fact that flu illness can be fatal in children both with and without high-risk medical conditions. Severe complications from the flu are found in otherwise healthy children, especially those younger than two years of age.
Dr. Robert Graham, Medical Director for Mid-Michigan District Health Department (MMDHD), urges everyone six months of age and older to receive an annual flu vaccination. Vaccination of parents, relatives, and caregivers of children less than six months is critical in protecting this vulnerable population. Graham added, “During the study period, 357 children with no underlying health problems died needlessly.”
