Barry adds, “This house was built in 1859 by Robert M. Steel, a prominent railroad builder and contractor in Michigan. At one time, Mr. Steel was the wealthiest resident of Clinton County. He owned one sixth of the site and several hundred acres of farm lands within the corporate city limits.

In 1887 he built the Steel Hotel in St. Johns at a cost of $65,000, one of the finest hotel buildings in the state in its day. The Steel Hotel was destroyed by fire on March 28, 1975. It was located on the northwest corner of Higham Street and Clinton Avenue.

The second story of the house has been removed and the remaining structure extensively remodeled. The current owner is Jason Crowell. Past owners include: Cynthia Dupruis and William Hrymecki, Weslry Martens, Virginia Crowell, and James Martens.
