Clearing Away Winter:Brendan Kiel, Dillon Minix, Zack Theis, Vince Jandernoa and Josh Theis work with Kiwanis members and school groups to clean up the Veterans Memorial on Clinton Ave.
Each year Kiwanis Clubs around the world participate in a day of community service they celebrate as “Kiwanis One Day,” and St. Johns Kiwanis joined in the international move by clearing winter’s tracks from the Veterans’ Memorial and Mt. Rest Cemetery. In addition the Kiwanis, Key, Builder, and AKtion Clubs will be showing their community spirit by volunteering with the CASA Super Hero run/walk on Saturday April 26.
Sharon Bassette chaired the local project by organizing fellow Kiwanians and members of St. Johns High School Good Wins Key Club and volunteers, along with arranging for donations from area businesses that helped ensure a successful effort. “Our members responded readily,” she said, “and we’re most grateful for donations received from Firstbank, Spud’s Party Store and Andy T’s.” Respectively, those contributions included fruit and lemonade, donuts and bark chips.

Kiwanians participating besides Ms. Bassette included Curt Keck, Laura Mullaney, Graham Filler, Marcia Peterson and Jim Gunther. Non-Kiwanis volunteers were Keith Peterson, and Judy Thelen. Dennis Scott represented the Veterans’ group.
Through the efforts and donations of those mentioned and the sunshine warmth of a beautiful spring day, Ms. Bassette declared Kiwanis One Day project most successful.
Coach Mohre’s St. Johns High School Track Team volunteered to rake and pick up debris from the winter and spring winds at Mt. Rest Cemetery in St. Johns. This is the 7th year they have provided this service to the cemetery.
