National HIV Testing Day is June 27
National HIV Testing Day takes place on June 27 to encourage individuals to “Take the Test, Take Control.”
HIV/AIDS is one of the most devastating diseases of all time and has an enormous impact on American lives. An estimated 50,000 new cases are reported every year, and more than 1.1 million Americans are currently living with HIV. It is frightening that of those infected, one out of every six people do not know they have the disease.
There are several groups of people who are more likely to get HIV and for whom testing is highly encouraged. This includes those who participate in unsafe sexual practices, those who share needles, and those with an existing sexually transmitted disease (STD).
Early detection and treatment is vital in reducing the spread of the virus and increasing the chances of living a longer, healthier life.
To encourage individuals to know their HIV status, Mid-Michigan District Health Department (MMDHD) will be offering free and confidential HIV testing on June 27, 2014 at each of its three branch offices.
While testing on this day is free, an appointment is needed, so be sure to call MMDHD at 989-831-3615 in Montcalm County, 989-875-1019 in Gratiot County, or 989-227-3111in Clinton County — because it’s better to know!
