Baker student earns first place

bakerthGlobal Business Strategy competition
Baker College of Owosso student Trevor Kryza, of Owosso, has won first place in the online Global Business (GLO-BUS) strategy simulation competition. This is the second consecutive year that a student from Baker College of Owosso has earned this honor and the seventh consecutive year at least one of its students has placed in the top 50.
bakerKryza acted as the sole proprietor of the fictitious Da Camera Company and competed against more than 500 similar businesses managed by students, in teams of up to five, representing 46 colleges and universities.
“We are extremely proud of Trevor and of the faculty who helped guide and prepare him for this intense competition,” said Tom Kurtz, dean of business and computing programs for Baker College of Owosso. “Trevor competed individually as an undergraduate against tens of thousands of students from across the globe, most of whom competed on teams of multiple students and many were in graduate programs.”
The Chesaning native, who tied for first with 15 competitors, said he made approximately 150 business decisions each week throughout the eight-week, online competition that affected his company’s wholesale, Internet and private-label marketing channels in designated continents.
“It was amazing how the smallest decision can have a huge impact on a business,” Kryza said. “The process was exciting and brought together many of the things that we learned in class.”
Kryza participated in GLO-BUS this spring as part of the required strategic management course for the degree that he was awarded this summer-a bachelor’s in management with a minor in marketing.
The object of the GLO-BUS simulation is to make management decisions that promote the company relative to investor expectations and best-in-industry practices. Both categories measure earnings per share, return on equity, stock price, credit rating and image rating. Investor expectations are known in advance, and the management teams competed against each other for the favor of the investors.
