Jonathan Pulling tells us that this is 409 East Walker Street. He writes: “It is on the Northwest corner of Walker and Swegles Streets. I delivered many newspapers to the several of the tenants. The only one that I remember well was Minnie Barrington.”
Ken Bond adds, “This house is the Post house located on Walker and Swegles. There are 6 pretty nice apartments in this house.”
Sandy VanEtten concurs. “The house would be on Walker and Swegles streets, owned by Jody Post.”
Editor’s note: This house was built by David French (French’s Corners) as a town home for his wife. Later it was purchased by architect R.V. Gay and remodeled into apartments, hence the Gay Apartments.

RV Gay, owner of the above property was marching down Steel Street with a company of his American Legionnaires, returning from Memorial Day ceremonies at Mt. Rest Cemetery when the fire siren shrieked in St. Johns May 30, 1936. Smoke could be seen billowing up over the trees to the south on a line with the apartment house. Mr. Gay left the line of march to investigate. He soon learned that it was his place, and before it could be extinguished the whole structure was gutted with a $20,000 loss.
