Changes In Curbside Recycling and more
Changes In Curbside Recycling: With Granger being awarded the refuse, recycling, and spring cleanup contract based on it being the low bidder, certain changes will occur with respect to residential curbside recycling. By now each residence address has received a Granger 96 gallon capacity wheeled recycling container (called “Curbys”). This container replaces the 18 gallon Waste Management bins previously in use. It was the intent by the City Commission to allow for additional recycling for every resident.
With the increased capacity for weekly recycling, it is anticipated residents will use fewer green bags and realize savings as a result. If you do not want to use the 96 gallon cart please call city offices and we will arrange to have the roll cart picked up. There are no additional options at this time as the contract signed with Granger details that the 96 Gallon “Curby” cart will be the only curbside pick-up available. The “Curby” may be set out on an as needed basis in conjunction with your weekly service day. Providing more recycling capacity should prove helpful for the environment.
One of the reasons Granger was able to give the City a favorable contract price is based on the fact its recycling system is automated, meaning there is a mechanized, arm that extends from the trucks to pick up and dump the Curbys. For this reason any resident who wishes to use curbside recycling must use the Curby containers. The mechanized arms simply cannot accommodate containers other than the Curbys.
While the City recognizes that some residents are resistant to this new system, we believe after an initial adjustment period people will see the distinct advantages to this new system. And while it is true these containers are much larger than bins, they are on wheels, making them easier to get down the driveway and to the curb area.
While discussing curbside pickup, this is a good time to remind residents of some of the other benefits they enjoy through city curbside programs. Besides refuse, recyclables, and spring cleanup, residents are able to put both their yard waste and tree limbs curbside for city pickup. The City believes that these services further promotes our community as a great place to live. Through the combined efforts of residents, our refuse contractor and city staff, St. Johns can be proud of its efforts to be environmentally conscious.
Private Fireworks: With the 4th of July holiday just completed, residents are reminded that the City has both fireworks usage regulations and noise restrictions in place. Under state and local law consumer fireworks can only be used legally during national holidays, and on the day immediately preceding and immediately after such holidays. Additionally, the City of St. Johns Police Department enforces “quiet hours” (11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.) in town through the City’s noise ordinance. A civil infraction or misdemeanor citation can issue for violations of this nature.
During any holiday or family event that requires guest overnight parking on City streets please notify the St Johns Police Dept. M-F from 8-5 or by dialing 911 for approval.
