Summer Reading Program Kick-Off Event and more
The Briggs Library’s first ever Summer Reading “Super-Duper Kick-Off” will be Monday, June 8 from 4-8pm at the Rotary Park across from the Library. Families can register for the Summer Reading Program during this FREE event, and while they are here, enjoy an inflatable bounce house and other attractions, face painting, crafts, games, hometown heroes, and more! Pizza and pop will be provided for purchase by Deano’s Pizza. The Briggs Library Friends Group is generously sponsoring this program.
Don’t Judge a Book By Its Cover
Adults looking to jump start their summer reading are invited to attend our “Don’t Judge a Book By Its Cover” program on Thursday, June 11 from 7:00-8:00pm. In this fast-paced activity, participants will preview brand new books before they hit the Library shelves, and make snap judgments about the books based on their covers. By the end of the evening, each participant will have a personalized reading list filled with books they may have otherwise overlooked. Registration is required.
Jr. Reader Book Club
Join the Junior Readers Book Club as we learn about heroes this summer. We will meet on Monday, June 22 at 7:00. We will be discussing the book “High Time for Heroes” by Mary Pope Osborne as well as play a game and have a snack. The book club is for kids in grades 2-4 and registration starts on Tuesday, May 26. Books will be available at the Circulation Desk when registering.
Movies Galore
The Monday Matinee for Monday, June 15 is the classic Road to Morocco (unrated, 83 mins.) starring Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. The movie starts at 1:00pm and light refreshments will be provided. Family Movie Fridays kick off with The Incredibles (rated PG, 115 mins.) on Friday, June 12, and Underdog (rated PG, 84 mins.) on Friday, June 19. Both movies start at 2:30pm.
Briggs Reads!
Briggs Public Library is offering Briggs Reads! a community-wide reading event this summer! In September the library will be hosting Michigan author Julie Lawson Timmer, as she discusses her novel, Five Days Left. The library has multiple copies of the book on hand and is inviting all interested patrons to read it this summer in advance of Ms. Timmer’s visit. If you are interested in reading the book, stop by the library to borrow a copy. The Briggs Reads! program has been generously sponsored by the Briggs Library Friends Group.
New Hours Coming
One of the most commented on items in the survey that patrons had the opportunity to compete last fall/winter was the Library’s hours. A number of individuals said they would like to see more hours on Friday evening and on Saturday. The Library would have loved to have been able to just add more hours but does not have the financial resources to do so. In the last five years the Library’s annual operating revenue has decreased by $140,690 and it is operating on a little more than half of what other libraries serving a similar size population do. In an effort to honor the wishes of the public, the decision was made to shift the Library’s hours starting Monday, July 6th. The new hours will be Monday through Thursday 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, Friday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and Saturday 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Please try this new schedule out and let us know what you think.
Summer Storytimes:
There are still openings available for Toddler, PrimeTime & Lapsit storytimes. See website for dates and times. Registration is required.
