$3,000 to help adult women achieve career goals
LAFCU is accepting applications for the third annual WHEELTM Scholarship Contest that helps women who wish to pursue education needed to enter or re-enter the workforce or advance in their careers.
The 2015 Women Helping Educate Every Lady (WHEEL) program will award a $1,000 scholarship to each of three winners to attend Lansing Community College (LCC). The application deadline is Friday, August 14.
“It’s challenging for adults to obtain the resources to return to school, and even more so for women who often put their careers on hold for family obligations,” said Kelli A. Ellsworth Etchison, vice president of community and business development of LAFCU. “This scholarship program will help three women achieve professional and personal goals by making the needed additional education more affordable. Their success in the workplace also supports a healthy economy, which is important to LAFCU.”
The ideal candidate will need a few classes to complete a degree or to become licensed or certified for a new occupation. Winners will be determined by a one-page essay about the applicant’s new career choice, why she wants to pursue it now, and her inspiration for returning to school. Entries will be judged on content and accuracy.
A 2014 WHEEL scholarship winner, Andrea Skrip, of Charlotte, used the scholarship to begin a two-year radiologic technology program to become a radiologist and has a job waiting for her upon graduation.
“It will be so exciting to use the knowledge that I am gaining at LCC in a clinical setting,” she said. “The LAFCU WHEEL scholarship has helped me tremendously.”
Eligible applicants for a LAFCU WHEEL scholarship live or work in LAFCU’s service area, which includes the counties of Barry, Calhoun, Clinton, Eaton, Gratiot, Ingham, Ionia, Jackson, Livingston, Montcalm and Shiawassee.
