Recalling the last street resurfacing in 1968
While reviewing information on the proposed street improvement project, we recalled the last major resurfacing effort was the year we came to St. Johns – 1968!
As newcomers then, we couldn’t speak to the entire city, but the times we traveled bumpy Oakland St. were soon forgotten once the workers and their machines left behind a new and seamless layer of blacktop. Since then, city administrations have struggled to maintain our streets hampered by economic and budget challenges and the reluctance of voters to approve designated millage.
Currently our city streets reflect the lack of care the years have encountered. Time (since 1968!) and use (area’s population increase) have asked greater demand from street surfaces, a condition which, if left unattended, will only worsen.
We encourage two suggestions:
First, become familiar with what is being proposed by reading the special pamphlet and specific information describing the proposal.
Second, simply drive along some of the streets identified as needing improvement.
If you do these things, we feel comfortable that you will join us in supporting the requested millage and cast a favorable vote on Tuesday, November 5.
