Hazel Belle Bywater
Hazel Belle Bywater, age 73, of Ovid, MI passed away Monday, June 1, 2015 at Sparrow Health Systems, Lansing, MI.
Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes Elsie, MI, on Friday, June 5, 2015 at 3:00 P.M., with Ernest Bywater officiating. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery Elsie, MI. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2015 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home.
Hazel was born in Elsie, Michigan on August 28, 1941, the daughter of Dewitt Dale and Elizabeth (Robinson) Dunham. She attended Elsie High School. On January 14, 1961 Hazel married Alfred Ernest “Ernie” Bywater at the Elsie United Methodist Church; Ernie died on July 22, 1997. Hazel had worked for the Ovid Elsie Schools as a cook for 37 years before her retirement. She enjoyed baby-sitting children, and she also enjoyed the girls weekend out every summer. She had special friends she loved to play cards and games with; Betty, Carol, Janet and Rose. Hazel was a good cook and also liked to bake. She resided most of her life in the Elsie area before moving to Ovid 7 years ago.
She is survived by 3 sons; Ernie and Carrie Bywater of Kincheloe, MI, Al and Sheila Bywater of Ovid, MI, Dale and Amy Bywater of Summerdale, AL, daughter Tammy and David Ritenburg of Elsie, MI, 15 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and brother Merle and Virginia Dunham. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, and grandson Jason.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes Elsie, Michigan.
Richard H. Griffin
Richard H. Griffin, 52 of Ovid, MI died on Friday, May 29, 2015 at Memorial Hospital in Owosso. Richard was born on December 14, 1962 in Clinton County, MI the son of Clyde E. and Ellen (Pease) Griffin. He graduated from Ovid-Elsie High School in 1981 and on September 24, 1983 he married Ruth A. Heringer in South Lebanon, Ohio. Richard was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and currently was employed at Clark Engineering in Owosso as a press operator.
Richard enjoyed reading, video games and racket ball.
Survivors include his wife Ruth, sons Richard Scott ( Bobbie Blemaster) of Ovid and Ryan E. Griffin on Jamestown, North Dakota 4 grandchildren and good friends Jacklin and Larry Germain, Lorie Stillman, Stacey Brewbaker and Connie and Gary Kioski along with many others.
The family suggests memorials to the charity of the donor’s choice. A celebration of Richard’s life will be held at the Griffin residence 326 E. Clinton St., Ovid, MI on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.

Gleneda Mae Heddens
Gleneda Mae Heddens, 69, of St. Johns, retired school bus driver, died Sunday May 31, 2015.
Private services will be held. Arrangements by Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, DeWitt Chapel.
Clarence Fox
Clarence “Pete” Fox, died May 27, 2015 at the age of 82. He was born on November 20, 1932 in Kincaid, West Virginia, the son of Frank and Virginia Fox. He was a member of First Church of God in St. Johns and retired from the State of Michigan as an Elevator Division Chief. Pete married Barbara Capon on September 15, 1956 in Detroit and she preceded him in death on January 4, 2010.
Surviving are his children, Pamela (Gary) Flones of Indian River, Peggy (Peter) Carter of Grand Rapids, Brad (Cathy) Fox of Dearborn, grandchildren, Cindy Flones, Cheri (Kevin) McSherry, Scott Flones, Arielle Carter, Garrett Carter, Brandy (Tom) Tudor and Bradly (Kim) Fox, great grandchildren, Jaiden Tudor and Jeremiah Fox, brother, Kenneth Fox, sisters, Leona (Jim) Piercy, Shelby (Ronnie) Wolford, sister in law, Cathy Fox and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Barbara, son, Jonathon Fox and brother, Sheldon Fox.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at the First Church of God in St. Johns, with Pastor Perry Purcell officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday, 6-8 p.m. and Tuesday, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Osgood Funeral Home in St. Johns. Contributions may be made in memory of Pete to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Kayla M. Crowell
Kayla M. Crowell died unexpectedly Thursday, January 22, 2015 at the age of 22. She was born July 14, 1992 in St. Johns, MI the daughter of Rodney and Diana (Gordon) Crowell. She graduated from St. Johns High School with the Class of 2010 and was currently taking some college classes.
Surviving are her parents, Rodney (Mae) Crowell of St. Johns and Diana (Don) Wittkopp of Terrell, TX; her brother, Casey Crowell and his fiancée Kaitlyn Young; half brother, Tim Gorman; step-sisters, Megan (Andy) May, Heather (Joshua Blakeman) Platte, Jennifer (Michael) Schrader; nephews, Jonathan Schrader and Karcyn Crowell grandparents, Richard and Norma Crowell of St. Johns.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, June 6, 2015 at St. John’s Lutheran Church 511 E. Sturgis, St. Johns with Rev. Dr. Bryan Salminen officiating. The family was assisted with these arrangements by Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns.
Mary Jane Simon
Mary Jane Simon, beloved wife and mother, passed away on May 29, 2015. Mary Jane was born on July 23, 1922 the daughter of John and Dorothy Platte. She graduated from Westphalia High School and attended Michigan State University. For many years she helped operate Platte’s Confectionery Store in Westphalia. She worked as the executive assistant to the plant manager of Fisher Body during the War effort.
Mary Jane was a passionate advocate for Michigan State and intense fan of the Spartan athletics, particularly football and basketball. She enjoyed golf at Walnut Hills and was an avid bridge player. She was one of the founding members of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish.
Mary Jane is survived by her wonderful spouse and best friend of 69 years, Theodore (Ted), son Roy and daughter-in-law Lou Anna. Services will be private.
