I remember well Hafners Five and Dime located in the first block of Clinton Ave next to J.C. Penney.

Candy, chips you name it, this was always my first stop when I left Rodney B. Wilson at 2:30 p.m. to go to my Co-Op job at Bement Public Library. The old fashioned candy counter in the front of the store was my first stop. Always a scoop of potato chips and then candy, just enough to tide me over at the job. A favorite store for all of the kids.

Unfortunately, the store went out of business just before the Steel Hotel burned in the Spring of 1975.

As Carroll O’Conner would say, “Those Were The Days.”
