If you grew up watching Lassie or Rin-Tin-Tin, you are going to love this! Capital City Dog Sport Association is presenting the 12th annual Dog Sports Open protection dog tournament on Saturday August 28 and Sunday August 29, 2010, hosted by Cher Car Kennels at 4215 S. Lowell in St. Johns, Michigan.
\nThe public is invited to watch this unique dog show, featuring dog and handler teams exhibiting obedience, agility and protection abilities.
\nThe tournament has three categories – beginning, intermediate and advanced; with progressively harder tasks required in each level. Both on and off leash obedience is demonstrated while the handler works through some unusual obstacles. This year\u2019s theme is \u201cRoaring Twenties.”. The protection scenarios also vary dependent upon category of entry, but start with the basic car agitation and handler protection, leading up to the elaborate advanced scenarios such as Kidnapping, Gangland or Serial Killer where the dog must protect the innocent on command and defend its handler from the worst of foes.
\nGreat fun and humor abound in this tournament, as it is always amusing to watch how each contestant encourages their dog to complete tasks that they may never have seen or done before! Sometimes too the dogs exhibit a \u201cmind of their own\u201d and hammer the bad guy a little more than necessary, all to the delight of the crowd.
\nThe competition begins at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday with the beginning entries. The tournament resumes on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. with the intermediate and advanced entries. The advanced competitors are kept sequestered so they cannot benefit from watching other competitors perform and problem solve their way through the course. Food is available both days, and Saturday has a Doggon good raffle!
\nEntries are open to all breeds, including mixes. Some of the competitors are seasoned veterans of multiple dog sports, and others are grandmothers competing with family companions\u2026 both large and small. Everyone is welcome.
