Reader responds to Barry’s electric car questions<\/strong>

\nIf it’s a purely electric car it looks like it could run up your bill a good 56 cents to $3.18 cents per day. This is all depending on the time of day you choose to charge and how far down you’ve run your battery. These Teslas and Chevy Volts’ are averaging full-charge time at 11 kWh (kilowatt hours). That would be the equivalent of $3 to $4.80 in gas based on June pricing. But no one expects gas to get cheaper. Not really. The electric car does mean we use more coal, but we get coal here and not the Middle East, so we’ve got that going for us.

\nMy car is a hybrid; so when it is using the gas motor, there is a generator recharging the electric battery portion. I save a ton of money on gas for sure. The car software decides when it uses battery and when it uses gas engine.
\nThe Volt is $41K and that will take you a decade to recoup your gas savings money compared to if you had bought a car at the price range most of us are willing to spend. But, for folks who buy BMW’s and other status cars, they’ll spend the same money they would have for their showpiece and make a substantially smaller carbon footprint daily.

\nThe electric car is at where we always are with new technologies (insert, “didn’t we have battery powered cars at the beginning of the 20th Century?” here) begin. At first, we say, “Dear lord, I’ll never be able to afford that.” And then, given Moore’s law and capitalism, we’ll find a way to make it affordable for the masses in a short while.
\nBut if the cost of a new electric car does turn out to be expensive, I don’t think anyone would “take it out on” Barry.
