Born on May 6, 1921, graduated from Eastern High School (1939) and Lansing Secretarial College. Mary met Marvin at a dance when she was 17. Both always said it was love at first sight. “We simply recognized each other.” Sweethearts from that moment on, they were married on June 27, 1941. They received a team of horses as a wedding present from his parents, a very useful gift for a young farming couple at that time.<br \/>\nMary helped Marvin with the dairy farm and she also worked as a telephone switchboard operator at Oldsmobile in the 1940’s. Later she worked as a secretary of Farm Bureau Insurance and for the Grand Ledge Public Schools. Together they had 61 wonderful years. When Marvin died in 2002 her heart went with him. During this time she spent many hours working as a volunteer for Operation Christmas Child, wrapping hundreds of gift boxes and making necklaces and bracelets to be sent to children overseas. Mary was also an avid reader all of her life. Her mother once told her she had been “born knowing how to read” and in 2008 she composed a “Suggested Reading List” for incoming college students, which is currently in use.
