Baker offers new technical training <\/strong>
\nBaker College of Owosso is offering a variety of new technical training workshops in October.
\n“Introduction to Welding Codes and Standard Practices” is a two-part workshop designed to introduce students to welding codes and practical applications of the AWS D1.1 Standard, Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS\u2019s), and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR\u2019s). Scheduled for October 12 and 14, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Baker\u2019s Tech Center, room 1641. Cost is $145.
\n“Introduction to PLCs” is a two-part workshop that will benefit those who work with PLC-based equipment, including those who program; installing, maintain or troubleshoot equipment; or who purchase or implement cost reduction and automation programs. This hands-on introduction covers the fundamentals of reading a programmable controller program, inputting data, and troubleshooting programmable controllers. Scheduled for October 13 and 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Baker\u2019s Tech Center, room 1622. Cost is $165.
\n“HVAC Certification for Technicians: EPA Sections 608 and 609” is a two-part workshop that addresses the proper handling, transfer, maintenance or installation requirements for equipment containing refrigerant under Sections 608 and 609 of the Federal Clean Air Act. On day two, students will review material and take the Section 608 certification exam for Stationary Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. Students will also receive a take home, open book exam for Section 609 certification for servicing motor vehicle air conditioners. Scheduled for October 15 and 22, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Baker\u2019s Tech Center, HVAC Lab\/Room 1643. Cost is $199.
\nSeveral hands-on welding classes are also available in October. “Fundamentals of Stick Welding” covers safety practices and provides hands-on practice in shielded metal arc welding, torch cutting, and plasma cutting. Welding will be performed on mild steel-plate using E7018 and E7024 electrodes in a variety of weld positions. Scheduled for October 5 and 7, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Baker\u2019s Tech Center. Cost is $145.
\n“Fundamentals of MIG Welding” addresses safety issues and provide hands-on practice in shielded metal arc welding, torch cutting, and plasma cutting. Scheduled for October 19 and 20, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Baker\u2019s Tech Center. Cost is $145.
\n“Fundamentals of TIG Welding” is an introductory session that will discuss safety and provide hands-on practice in the TIG welding process with a variety of wires and base materials including steel and aluminum. Emphasis will be placed on the type of weld and filler metals needed for a particular base material or type of joint. Scheduled for October 26 and 28, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Baker\u2019s Tech Center. Cost is $145.

Baker offers Builders Prelicensure course<\/strong>
\nBaker College of Owosso\u2019s Business and Corporate Services Division is offering a Builders Prelicensure course in Owosso beginning in September.
\nIn order to better serve prospective Shiawassee County builders, a new condensed course format that meets the State of Michigan\u2019s required 60-hour prelicensure training is being offered. Classes will prepare participants for residential builder and contractor positions and enhance knowledge of proper practice and technique to those currently employed in residential construction. A Certificate of Completion will entitle successful participants to take the state Residential Builders Exam.
\nThis course will run on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6PM to 10:50 PM beginning on September 28, 2010 and ending on October 28, 2010. All classes will be held at the Bentley Campus. The course fee is $750 and includes all class materials.
\nAll sessions will be facilitated by Corunna-based architect Jed Dingens, AIA, LEED AP. Mr. Dingens has taught courses in the Construction Management Program at Michigan State University and is an Approved Instructor by the State of Michigan for this Builders Prelicensure course.
