His father-in-law, Dean Lawrence, a lawyer in St Johns back in the ’40s and ’50s, was good friends with my parents, John and Martha Tillotson.
I thought I would give you some information about my mother, who was raised in St. Johns. Some long-time residents might remember her.
Martha Marshall Tillotson, 94, daughter of Schuyler Lewis Marshall and Eula Mae Foerch Marshall, passed away January 19, 2010 in Fairborn, OH. She is survived by her daughter, Amanda Ruth Tillotson of Dayton, OH, her son and daughter-in-law, John Schuyler Tillotson and Janice Stewart Tillotson of Dana Point, CA, a grandson, Joseph Marshall Tillotson, of Torrance, CA. and two brother-in-laws, Stanley Loomis and Ben Stuckey.
She probably graduated from Rodney Wilson High School. The year would have been 1933 or ’34. She also graduated from Michigan State.
Her father was mainly responsible for the building of the hospital in St. Johns and he also was editor of the Clinton County Republican-News back in the 30s and 40s. The Marshall family lived in the big brick house on the southeast corner of Higham and Swegles.

The SJ Indy’s Marshall photo collection includes this photo taken at the time the family dog gave birth to 13 — count ’em — 13 puppies.
Our whole family (9 grandchildren from the 6 Marshall kids) is very proud of Grandpa’s accomplishments and character. He came out of great poverty. He had no shoes and in the winter would warm his feet in the fresh horse manure, then walk to school and get teased for how he smelled. Still he made something of himself. Mom was an elementary school teacher, and in her retirement, did a lot of piano playing for nursing home residents.
I also found a Google listing for Esdeane Conley Osgood, as a DAR award presenter at a high school in Bethesda, MD in June. She was my mom’s maid of honor in April of 1946.
Computer technology has really made this a small world, hasn’t it?
Thanks,
Amanda Tillotson
fineandmandy@aol.com
Dayton, OH 45431

50th Anniversary – a golden day in 1960
Fifty years ago today – Oct. 8, 1960 – dawned clear and bright.
It was a perfect day for a wedding.
Leaves on the maple trees around St. Peter Lutheran Church-Riley were dressed in their finest hues of orange, yellow and red, and a cloudless blue sky with golden sunshine offered a promise of many happy years for the young couple, Duane Stearns and Sherry Kloeckner.

God delivered on His promise. Blessings beyond measure were heaped upon the newlyweds in the intervening years. Primary among those gifts were two children, Mike and Lisa and their spouses, Marie and Brian, and four grandchildren, Amelie and Nathan Stearns and Tyler and Jake Lancaster.
God’s greatest gift to my sister and Duane, however, was faith. Their belief in God’s grace and constant love sustained them through the myriad of difficulties that all married couples encounter, and was critical in the months leading up to Sherry’s death almost two years ago, Oct. 24, 2008.

On their 48th anniversary, Sherry was hospitalized after having undergone surgery and unsuccessful treatments for carcinosarcoma. They both knew that there would be no Golden Anniversary celebration.
Except there is.
Their family and friends recall with much joy that day 50 years ago when a young and happy couple walked up the aisle after the wedding ceremony, ready to start a new life together.

Their steadfast love for each other – in good times and bad – continues to inspire us all.
Happy 50th Anniversary, Sherry and Duane.
