Nonperishable food items and cash donations will be collected from employees, medical staff, the community and volunteers to help needy individuals in the Carson City area.<br \/>\nEach year, one in 10 people in Michigan rely on the food bank network for emergency food assistance. For more than a decade, Carson City Hospital has participated with the Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA) and the Michigan Association of Healthcare Advocates (MAHA) in their primary sponsorship of this statewide food- and fund-raising campaign. The program is designed to use contributions within the communities where items are donated.<br \/>\n“We appreciate all of the donations from our community in the past, and hope this year will see even more donations in this time of need,” said Shelly Weaver, who is coordinating the program for the hospital. “People often ask what they should donate. The best advice is to avoid home-canned or perishable items such as chicken salad or bread, or items that are out of date. A good rule of thumb is to avoid donating food that you wouldn\u2019t eat yourself if you received it from other people.”<br \/>\nThe best items to donate include commercially canned fruits, vegetables and soup; canned meals such as spaghetti, ravioli and beef stew; tuna and canned meats; peanut butter; baby food and infant formula; unopened dry foods such as cereal, dry beans, boxed mixes; and personal hygiene and paper products, including disposable diapers.<br \/>\nOn October 11, bins were placed throughout Carson City Hospital and its clinic locations to collect donations of nonperishable grocery and food items. Until October 22, the public may drop off donations at the following locations:<br \/>\nAshley Family Care Center, 320 S. Sterling St., Ashley<br \/>\nCarson Family Care Center, 102 S.
