\nTeens Dance For Those Who Can\u2019t Dance-a-thon is an annual event hosted by REMIX, a St. Johns, Michigan\u00a0area Christian group made up of teens from various churches. \u00a0During the summer months, teens raise money for a given charity.\u00a0The dance was held on August 6, 2010.
\nThis year, teens raised over $4,400 for Relief After Violent Encounter, Inc. (RAVE). The money will be allocated to assist with Dating Violence education in the Clinton County high schools.
\nKimberly Hogan, head of Sponsorship and Webpage Development for REMIX said, “I\u2019m so glad that we\u2019re doing this. I never realized the extent and impact of dating violence until we began learning more about it through RAVE.”\u00a0
\nThe following facts are from Choose Respect’s “Get the Facts: Dating Abuse Statistics” and “About Choose Respect: Dating Abuse Fact Sheet”:
\n– Each year approximately one in four adolescents reports verbal, physical, emotional or sexual abuse.
\n– Approximately one in five adolescents reports being a victim of emotional abuse.
\n– Approximately one in five high school girls has been physically or sexually abused by a dating partner.
\n– Dating violence among their peers is reported by 54% of high school students.
\n– One in three teens report knowing a friend or peer who has been physically hurt by his or her partner through violent actions which included hitting, punching, kicking, slapping, and\/or choking.
\n– Nearly 80% of girls who have been victims of physical abuse in their dating relationships continue to date the abuser.
\n– Nearly 20% of teen girls who have been in a relationship said that their boyfriend had threatened violence or self-harm in the event of a break-up.
