\nA Family Nurse Practitioner (F.N.P.) is a registered nurse who has received special training and can perform many of the duties of a physician.
\nThat means newly certified Lisa Ferguson, F.N.P., can now help serve many of the same patients that her husband and office partner, Tom Ferguson, D.O., serves. Dr. Ferguson has been a popular family physician and a part of the medical community in the Carson City area for decades.

\n“My lifelong dream has been to practice medicine professionally,” said Lisa, who graduated from Michigan State University this past spring with a master’s degree in nursing. “I love every aspect of what I do – from the beginning of life to the last stages of life – we take care of our patients. Being able to apply what I’ve learned and treat people the way they should be treated in this small town is really what I love the most.”
\nLisa works with her husband in their independent, family medical practice located at 221 E. Maple St. in Carson City, which she said is very convenient for patients who need to merely cross the street for diagnostic and other services at Carson City Hospital. Before she began working with him there in 2002, she was a staff nurse in the Carson City Hospital Pain Clinic, as well as a long-time charge nurse on the Medical Surgical Unit there.
\nNow a grandmother, Lisa said her years of schooling meant she often had to miss out on the school and sports events of her three children – now 15, 20 and 26 years old. She said the patience of her husband, and his skill as a doctor, helped her achieve her success.
\n“He is a great mentor, and the most patient teacher I’ve ever had,” she said. “We also share a commitment to our patients, and we’re on call 24\/7.”
