He said the Detroit Lions would only win three games and I said, “Balderdash (or something like that), they’re going to win six!” On the line was one of two dinners. If he won, he and his family would enjoy a beef brisket dinner on us. And if I won, Betty and I will enjoy a Tail Spin Farm raised turkey dinner. After playing twelve games of a sixteen game season, the Lions’ record stood at 2-10. I knew then that my bet wasn’t looking good and Scott wore a big, seemingly permanent, smile.
Scott is a good Christian man and me, I’ve never been mistaken for the Pope. But I told him before each game of what remained of the season to look for a miracle, and I got it thanks to a team that had a bigger heart than they were given credit for.
Detroit won its last four games and finished the season with a 6-10 record. They made me look like a genius which is a word I’m not generally associated with. But better yet, they won a turkey dinner for us.
It’s Deja Vu, Thanksgiving all over again.

* * *

I’m still wrestling with the VCR/DVD recorder I bought last summer. I haven’t given up because I always feel I can find a way to fix the problem which is, the picture rolls and the tracking is always off which leads to noise lines on the screen. I needed to understand why. As we all know, when we send something back to be repaired, it works perfectly.
First I decided that the old tapes I had were the problem so I bought some new ones and that seem to work good for a while. Then I found out that most of the new tapes squealed like hell whenever I fast forwarded them. I don’t remember that happening in the old days.
The old days started in 1977 when we bought our first VCR. I won’t tell you what we paid for it.
Of course the squealing isn’t normal and the new tapes started acting like the old ones with one exception. The old tapes would not rewind all the way but the new ones would. I had another brand of new tapes on hand so I tried them. So far they don’t squeal when fast forwarded and the picture has no noise lines. I’ll see how long that last. If I’m right I have about ten brand new VHS tapes to sell so be prepared to make me an offer.
Why do I think this problem happened with a modern day VCR? Just because the old saying is still true, they don’t make things like they used to.

* * *

So what’s going to happen in this New Year? Damned if I know, I think we’ve gotten funky enough in this country so I hope we quit going in that direction. But there’ll be some critters in government who will say, “Oh no, hold on a minute, we’ve got other places to visit.” Those people scare the hell out of me.
I know the Republicans in the House want to pass a repeal of Lord Obama’s health care bill but that seems unlikely unless they can make another deal with Lord Obama. There are two chances Obamacare can be stopped. One is if the courts finally find it unconstitutional which probably won’t happen because our courts are full of more politicians than judges. The other is to cut the funding of Obamacare and the Republicans can do that because they control the house which authorizes spending.
Right behind the fact that I still can’t believe Obama was elected president comes the fact that I can’t believe this country needs a health care law. Millions of Illegals have crossed the border from Mexico and find no problem with the current system. They not only get it free but their children are educated free and their expectant mothers get free maternity care at any hospital in the nation. Topping that off is the fact that all of the Illegals’ newborns are automatically American citizens. All of this deemed by law. So what about Americans? Isn’t that same health care also given to them free if they have no means by which to pay for it other than sell their home? Or do they get turned away from the ER?
It makes you wonder, Gram.
And trying to prove once again that voters can be bought, Lord Obama sees fit to destroy health care for the rest of us who have insurance. Health care in the nation will go the way of our educational system and we’ll become a second rate nation.
I’d like to know who gave birth to the idea that Americans should come second. I’d like to meet that loser.
Until the next time . . .

[9

post-20353","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news
["GET
