The partnership is an adjunct to a corporate program sponsored by Big Boy for over 35 years benefitting food distribution centers in locations served by a Big Boy restaurant. This year, work by the restaurant and Kiwanis club passed on over 1,240 items which have – or ultimately will – end up on the tables of many deserving families.
“This corporate program has been in place for 35 years,” commented Patrick Hunt, manager of the St. Johns restaurant. “We call it ‘Operation CanDo’ and obviously, our goal is to collect as many food items as we are able for transfer to a local agency for distribution to those in need. This is a corporate wide effort, and we here at Big Boy have participated as a corporate entity since opening. For the past five Kiwanis has lent support to our efforts locally. We are pleased with the partnership.”
During the holiday period St. Johns Big Boy accepted donations from patrons, employees and others who placed food items in a CanDo collection box. Meanwhile, members of Kiwanis took a different approach. During the final two months of the year, members were encouraged to voluntarily give “a happy dollar” – or more – with all funds collected going toward a shopping spree for items identified by the Emergency Food Bank as greatly needed. Marilyn Thelen was the designated shopper and, with a list from the food bank, took some personal time in the aisles of local groceries filling the inventory. When her task was completed, Mike Zigler delivered the purchases to the food bank for final distribution.
“Members were very generous,” commented Ms Thelen “and, as with all other Kiwanis projects, this is representative of the spirit our club maintains.”

For the past five years the local Big Boy restaurant has been assisted in the program by St. Johns Kiwanis.
