Whenever a bearing required an oil hole, it was punched in the part causing sharp corners and burrs. The countersink machine chamfered the hole and removed them.<br \/>\nYears later chamfers were coined into the part at the press and eliminated the need for a secondary operation. That kept the price of the part low for the customer but at the same time, cut into Federal-Mogul profits. Federal-Mogul used to make money on each of the secondary operations.<br \/>\nIn front of the machines were either bearing pans, or bearing half-pans.
