\nThis photo, circa 1950, was taken during one of the early Federal-Mogul Open Houses.
\nPictured are a row of countersink machines. Whenever a bearing required an oil hole, it was punched in the part causing sharp corners and burrs. The countersink machine chamfered the hole and removed them.
\nYears later chamfers were coined into the part at the press and eliminated the need for a secondary operation. That kept the price of the part low for the customer but at the same time, cut into Federal-Mogul profits. Federal-Mogul used to make money on each of the secondary operations.
\nIn front of the machines were either bearing pans, or bearing half-pans. They mostly disappeared towards the end.
