The non-profit housing ministry received a check from United Church of Ovid, the church’s first installment in being part of the Apostles Apostles Build, which is the name of Habitat’s project this year.
“With an Apostles Build, 12 congregations work together to build a house with each church responsible for 1/12 of the project,” explains Michelle Smith, president of Habitat for Humanity of Clinton County. “As an Apostle, participating churches agree to provide $5,000 towards the cost of the build and also to provide volunteers for two weeks of the build,” says Smith.
Three representatives from Habitat for Humanity picked up a check from Rev. Greg Buchner, pastor of United Church of Ovid late last week. The church is just two blocks away from the intersection of Mill and Williams where Habitat for Humanity plans to build its next house.
“I am personally excited to be a part of the effort, and I’m even more excited that our church, The United Church of Ovid, is stepping forward with other churches to make the dream of home ownership happen for a family this year, says Rev. Greg Buchner, pastor at United Church of Ovid.
United Church of Ovid was the first church to sign on to be an Apostle church. Besides United Church of Ovid, four other churches have stepped up to become Apostles and Habitat is actively seeking seven more.
The four other churches signed on to be Apostles are:
· Salem, Lowe, Maple Rapids United Methodist Churches who are working together as one Apostle
· St. Jude Catholic Church (DeWitt)
· St. Joseph Catholic Church (St. Johns)
· First United Methodist (St. Johns)
“This is a great opportunity for churches looking for a mission project right in their own backyard,” explains Smith, who became president of the Habitat board in 2010. “Moving a local family into home ownership is a powerful way to put your faith in action,” adds Smith.
For more information about Habitat for Humanity of Clinton County’s Apostle Build, contact Sue Carroll, executive director at 989-227-1771

Rev.
