Paul Opsommer today applauded the DHS announcement that private licensed day care providers are not state employees, and union dues will no longer be collected from them.
\nDuring Tuesday’s House Department of Human Services (DHS) Appropriations Subcommittee, DHS Director Maura Corrigan announced the long-awaited policy shift away from forced unionization. As of March 18, dues will no longer be collected from Child Care Providers Together Michigan, which comprises more than 16,500 providers.
\n“This decision is a victory for private employees who were unfairly forced to pay union dues,” said Opsommer, R-DeWitt. “I applaud DHS for taking action to protect these providers when the court system was failing to do so.”
\nThe DHS policy change cancels the previous agreement Mott Community College had with the Michigan Based Home Child Care Council (MBHCCC) and the controversial government employee union, Child Care Providers Together Michigan.
\nThe agreement between the three placed Mott Community College as employer of 40,000 state home-based child care business owners and providers and enabled the union to collect dues from all home-based workers and employers.
\nOpsommer stressed the need to make sure that other private businesses be protected from similar abuses in the future. House Bill 4003, sponsored by Opsommer, would clearly define a state employee and indicate that a private business could not be unionized simply because it provided services and received payment from the state.
\n“Incorporating these important changes into state law will keep forced unionization from being put into place in other areas,” Opsommer said. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Lawmaker stresses need to prevent similar occurrences in the future<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-21212","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news"],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/21212","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=21212"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/21212\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=21212"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=21212"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stjindy.com\/archive1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=21212"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
