Chevrolet sponsored the race from 1935 to 1972 and offered scholarships as prizes.<br \/>\nThe Derby reached its peak of popularity during the 1950s and 1960s.<br \/>\nIn 1964 Alan Smith, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. Aloysius Smith, drove his soap box derby car to the championship.  Robert Schaefer finished seconhd and Gary Roach was third.
